Fans of Peaky Blinders, rejoice! While the film may still have a lengthy wait, a new drama with many’similarities’ is apparently in the works.
Dope Girls, a film set in the criminal underground, is rumoured to be in the works. It is based on the true tale of a single mother who constructed nightclubs all over London that doubled as drug dens.
Kate Meyrick’s hotspots in the 1920s allowed male and female customers to consume cocaine and heroine, since she was renowned as one of the city’s most hazardous ladies at the time.
The disturbing news is rumoured to be reaching our televisions soon.
A source revealed: ‘This is one of the most exciting TV projects in years and has lots of similarities to Peaky Blinders.
‘The role of Meyrick will be one of the most sought after in the industry, as she was a trailblazer for women’s independence and strength.’
The insider added to The Sun: ‘Her story isn’t well known and deserves to be in the spotlight. This isn’t just a female version of Peaky Blinders, it’s a stand-alone story that will shock millions.’
It is estimated that Meyrick earned £500,000 (£17 million now) from her work in addition to her notoriety.
While her part has not yet been cast, the magazine speculates that it may go to Suranne Jones or Gemma Arterton.
Meyrick, who grew up in an Irish family of vicars and physicians, married a doctor and had eight children, but they divorced when she was 43, and she quickly established her nightclubs.
Meyrick continued to run afoul of the law and was frequently tried, fined, or imprisoned.
Her famed clubs attracted criminals, call girls, and Hollywood stars Rudolf Valentino and Tallulah Bankhead.
Meyrick died in 1933, at the age of 57, after contracting the flu.
Peaky Blinders is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
