During a chaotic This Morning visit, Paul Gascoigne made his feelings for Chris Eubank quite apparent.
Gazza didn’t hold back when he joined Phillip Schofield and Rochelle Humes to discuss Danny Dyer’s new reality programme Scared of the Dark, and he said he’s not the retired boxer’s greatest fan.
“I’m just used to him,” he stated on Monday’s broadcast of the ITV afternoon show. ‘I thought he was born with a dictionary up his backside.’
Phil managed to keep a straight face as Rochelle appeared surprised by his statement, but the former footballer had previously expressed his immediate response when he found out Chris was joining him in the pitch black bunker.
‘The first one, I heard the lisp. I knew it was Eubanks and I just thought to myself, “Oh my word, not him!” That was my first thought,’ he deadpanned, while he had a lot of praise for blind comedian Chris McCausland, who helped him a lot.
‘He was fantastic, I think if it wasn’t for him I might’ve left straight away… He was incredible,’ he said, recalling the way he would direct Gazza when he sensed he was lost.
It was a tough experience for the retired England international, who has ‘always slept with the light on’ or with the comfort of the television because of his fear.
‘I always slept with the light on. It’s funny because when I told me mam I was going on the show she went, “You can’t do that, you’re scared of the dark”. So I put the phone down and rang me sisters who both said the same thing,’ he explained.
‘I thought, “Am I doing the right thing here?” I thought I’d be okay. I did a test before I actually went in there. There was a chair five yards from me, turned all the lights off and I missed the chair and hit the camera. I thought, “Oh, I’m in trouble here.” ‘
Gazza was feeling ‘quite confident’ heading in, and thought he’d joined by friend Danny, only to find out he was actually the host rather than taking part himself.
‘I’m like, “Danny? Danny?” There was nothing. That panic. That first bit – I feel like crying thinking about it,’ he said, visibly emotional. ‘I honestly thought I was gonna be stuck there for life and no one knew where I was. That’s the thought that went through my head.’
Fortunately for Gazza, he settled in and relaxed, becoming more like his actual self as he began to pull pranks on his co-stars.
‘I’d put breadcrumbs in the beds, I was throwing cheese at people, I was pulling their hairs and pretending it wasn’t me,’ he laughed. ‘I did a couple of pranks. That’s why I’m dreading the premiere tonight, because they’re going to know what I’m up to.’
He has also been rechristened Gassa, although he argued: ‘I was supposed to be trumping a lot in there. I think it was [Scarlett] Moffatt!’
‘A lot better. I don’t fear it as much. Claustrophobia is a lot better… The first few hours were horrific, I don’t know how I lasted.’
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV. Scared of the Dark airs tonight at 9pm on Channel 4.
