Sir David Jason, who played Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses, is joining The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades in a new TV role.
The 83-year-old will take the road and travel around the country to assist members of the public and professional decision-makers.
Sir David and Jay will be fronting Touring Toolshed, which will see them ‘park up their toolshed at the UK’s air shows, steam rallies, county fairs and vintage festivals, to meet some of the UK’s most talented crafters, makers and tinkerers – as well as people who could use a little help!’
The new series is said to bring a ‘lesser-known side’ of Sir David to our screens as he reveals his ‘life-long passion for creating and fixing things’.
The Del Boy actor said: ‘It’s great to be back on the nation’s TV screens doing something totally different.
‘I’ve played a lot of roles in my time but, to be myself, show off my creative passion and help the wonderful people we meet along the way resolve their mechanical masterpiece issues is very rewarding.
‘I’ve really enjoyed being on the road with Jay where we have built up a great friendship and had a lot of fun which I hope the viewers will enjoy watching when it airs.’
Jay added: ‘Working with Sir David Jason, a fellow craft enthusiast is a dream come true.
‘Filming is underway and it has been great to start helping the nations’ makers fix their passion projects.
‘We’ve met brilliant people and this series is going to be a delight for the BBC Daytime and iPlayer audiences.’
This comes after Sir David paid a visit to Jay’s The Repair Shop last year, with the 53-year-old sharing on social media: ‘Hi Guys Look who came down to visit us at @TheRepairShop today? A Real Diamond Geezer I’m a very Happy Bunny.’
The pair’s bond was also on display during a Strictly Come Dancing special, when Sir David lavished praise on Jay, who was playing the soundtrack to Only Fools & Horses.
‘Hello Jay, it’s your old mate Del Boy here,’ he began. ‘I understand you’re doing a bit of prancing about up there at the BBC. Well, good luck with that my son.
‘Oh, by the way, I understand that you’re doing it to my theme song right? That means there will be a royalty. Put it in an envelope at the BBC reception centre and I’ll pick it up later.’
He continued: ‘In the meantime, I want to wish you all the best and all the people that are watching the show and all the people who help make the show, I wish you all a very happy Christmas and a jolly good new year.’
Jay was visibly moved by the heartwarming words and admitted: ‘That’s just too much. That’s a Christmas present, that’s special.’
Touring Toolshed will air on BBC Two and iPlayer in 2024.
