Mrs Brown’s Boys has suffered another blow after its Christmas special earned the show’s lowest ratings in years.
The sitcom, created by show star Brendan O’Carroll, is one of the most divisive comedies on telly, and has become a mainstay of the BBC’s TV schedule since 2011.
However, just as the Beeb agreed to a staggering deal securing their spot on the festive line-up through to 2026, the latest Christmas episode failed to draw a big audience, pulling in just 3.8million viewers.
It’s a massive downfall from last year’s 4.6million, which in itself was a huge drop from previous years.
At its height, 2013’s special raked in 9.4million people.
The news comes just after former co-star Gary Hollywood, who played Dino Doyle on the series, announced he was suing creator O’Carroll over a pay dispute.
O’Carroll, who plays foul-mouthed Agnes on the show, recently downplayed Hollywood’s exit from the series as ‘following his own star’ as he moved to Spain.
However, speaking to Daily Star Sunday, Hollywood said that was far from the case and argued that he was being underpaid compared to his co-stars, many of which are family members of O’Carroll.
He explained: ‘I feel I wasn’t being paid equally and I wasn’t being given an explanation for decisions.
‘When I tried to resolve it, nothing was done. I was just disregarded. But I won’t put up with it any more. I won’t be treated like that. This has gone too far. They shouldn’t do this to people.
‘I am taking legal action. The papers have been lodged for a tribunal and the process has now started.’
Mrs Brown’s Boys returns 10pm on New Year’s Day.
