Millie Gibson appeared unconcerned when reports circulated that she had been dismissed by Doctor Who.
The former Coronation Street actress, 19, made her debut as the Time Lord’s companion, Ruby Tuesday, in the Christmas special. However, it has been reported that she will not return for a second season.
Millie, who played Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor in Russell T Davies’ sci-fi series, has not responded to the allegations, although she did share a photo on Instagram Stories while on holiday.
In the photo, the Butterfly actress is seen from behind, her back to the camera, in a rock pool towards the bottom of a tumbling waterfall surrounded by trees.
The Love, Lies, and Records actor looked stunning in a blue bikini as she took a break from her hectic acting schedule.
Russell, the showrunner of Doctor Who, has already written off Millie’s Ruby Tuesday in next scripts. According to a source, she will only return to ‘knot up loose ends’.
An insider told The Mirror: ‘Millie Gibson has all but left now and there’s a brand new companion, which is really exciting.
‘Russell is keeping things moving and isn’t letting the grass grow, that’s for sure.’
According to the newspaper, Millie will appear in only a few episodes of Barbie star Ncuti’s second season as the Time Lord, which will debut in 2025.
She has already taped eight episodes, which will premiere in May.
Varada Sethu, 32, is expected to replace her and appear with Ncuti in the 2024 Christmas special.
According to a source, Varada is a true jewel, and Russell was just astounded by her abilities. The cast and crew have really warmed up to her, and he’s confident the viewers will too.
She previously appeared in Doctor Foster, the Star Wars spin-off Andor, and the films Jurassic World Dominion and Now You See Me 2.
Ncuti seemed to respond to the allegations on social media, despite the absence of an official statement.
The Sex Education star showed Millie some love on Instagram, posting a selfie of them on the set of Doctor Who with the caption ‘My baby [heart emoji]’.
Millie’s Doctor Who debut was well-received, with fans praising her seamless connection with Ncuti and sharp humour.
‘Millie Gibson stole the show for me. I absolutely love Ruby Sunday!’ shared X user Ben L Maden after the episode aired.
‘I have to say, Millie Gibson already is proving that she’s gonna be one enjoyable and lovable companion. I literally cannot wait to see more of her as Ruby Sunday!! ,’ agreed Owen.
Doctor Who is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
