Megan Mullally, star of Will & Grace, has acknowledged that a spin-off centred on her character Karen Walker was almost developed in the mid-2000s.
Mullally was Grace’s (Debra Messing) secretary and companion on the hit comedy for 11 seasons, starring in almost 250 episodes.
The award-winning sitcom initially aired from 1998 to 2006 before being relaunched in 2017 for three more seasons.
Karen was seen to be living with Jack (Sean Hayes), her long-time friend, in the original conclusion, which featured a flashforward to 20 years in the future.
Mullally, 64, has revealed in a new interview that the rebooted comedy, which just ended production, wasn’t the only Will & Grace revival in the works.
‘There was some talk of me doing a Karen spin-off after the original show,’ she told reporters for E! News earlier this week.
‘But I wanted to do a show with [Only Murders in the Building actor] Martin Short that was different’ – the show with Short, 72, also never got made.
The legendary actress also stated that plans for a Karen spin-off were considered in the late 2010s, following the revival of Will & Grace.
‘They talked to me about doing a Karen spinoff after the last one, too,’ she admitted, ‘but,’ she confessed, ‘it wasn’t really real’.
Mullally went on to participate in other comedy programmes after Will & Grace, including 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Bob’s Burgers, and the recently resurrected Party Down.
Party Down also starred Adam Scott, who later appeared on Parks and Recreation, and Glee’s Jane Lynch, who played Sue Sylvester in the musical drama.
Mullally also made time to pay respect to her old Will & Grace co-star Leslie Jordan, who died unexpectedly at the age of 67 late last year.
Jordan, who played Beverly Leslie in 17 episodes of Will & Grace, amassed a sizable Instagram following until his sad death in October.
‘Instagram made him feel like people were seeing him and getting him,’ Mullally said, ‘And they were, and they still are.
It was his mode of transportation.’
Jordan slammed his automobile into a building in Hollywood, and physicians determined that’sudden cardiac failure’ was to blame.
Will & Grace is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
