Martin Lewis, the host of Good Morning Britain, has spoken up about his ‘tough’ years as a youngster before realising he had ‘arrived’.
The Money Saving Expert’s 50-year-old co-host Susanna Reid sat beside him on the ITV morning show, and he mentioned how shocked he was to see her after having spent the night ‘hanging out’ with Duran Duran.
‘Do you remember two weeks ago on this programme, John Taylor sat next to us on this same sofa in the corner and said, “Oh Susanna, I know you’re a massive fan of Duran Duran, I’ve got tickets for you to see us at the O2,” Susanna explained.
Despite having to wake up at 3.45 a.m., she went on to tell Martin about the concert last night.
‘There he was! At the after show party, and do you know what John Taylor said to me last night as I walked up to him to say thank you very much, it was a terrific show.
‘He said: “I didn’t think you were going to come! I didn’t think you would come! You get up so early in the morning, I said to my wife, that’s Susanna Reid, she did an interview with me the other week, she gets up at 3.45am, there’s no way she’s going to make it.”
‘And as we left, me and my friends Steve and Chris, as we left, Steve said to me, he said, “Your 15-year-old self would not believe that John Taylor said to you at a party after watching Duran Duran, I didn’t think you were going to come!”‘
As Susanna ignored Martin’s question about how much sleep she actually managed to get, he compared: ‘Whereas my 15-year-old self would probably believe that I sat up spending the night working on the energy direct debit cycle to be absolutely honest.’
He added: ‘Although, I had my similar moment. I did have quite difficult teen years, but the one thing I loved was athletics, that was my sport that I loved and adored.’
Martin went on to explain that he was a ‘volunteer presenter at the world championships’ and that became his ‘moment’.
‘I met my heroes!’
He continued: ‘I was there commentating and presenting on athletics and I just thought, this is what I want my 15-year-old self to know, it will all be okay, you’ll get there, and look what you get to do and what you love.
‘It’s a lovely moment!’
‘It was a phenomenal moment last night,’ Susanna added, before reassuring: ‘And I got plenty of sleep so don’t worry, I’m fully on top of everything!’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.
