A fresh new Bridgerton prequel spin-off series is on the way, set to highlight one of the Netflix show’s most adored characters.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story hits theatres this week, headlined by returning performer Golda Rosheuvel and newcomer India Amarteifio in the titular role.
Since the beginning of the Shonda Rhimes TV series, the royal figure has been a focal point, selecting the Diamond of each social season before months of matchmaking ensue.
Her own episode will reveal what Charlotte was like before and soon after she became queen, as well as how she and her husband King George III (Corey Mylchreest) connected and went on to create a strong and enduring union.
What happened to Queen Charlotte since the last time we saw her? Here’s what you should know.
What happened to Queen Charlotte at the end of Bridgerton season 2?
Throughout the second season of Bridgerton, one of the Queen’s main goals has remained to discover the true identity of Lady Whistledown, who steers the Ton’s gossip with her regular newsletters.
The Queen joyfully welcomes the news of Edwina Sharma’s engagement to Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) after naming her Edwina Sharma (Charithra Chandran), offering to fund the nuptials personally as a show of her genuine approbation.
The wedding arrangements, however, are thrown into chaos when Edwina discovers Anthony and her sister Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) have affections for one other and flees at the altar.
While the Queen is initially upset that the wedding is not going as planned, she later steps in to assist Kate and Anthony.
The couple is shown dancing at a gala, unable to conceal their affections for each other… Rather of allowing the Tonne to talk and (correctly) think that the wedding was cancelled off due to Kate and Anthony, Queen Charlotte emphasises that it was her plan all along.
Meanwhile, in season two, the royal accuses Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) of being Lady Whistledown, which has her barking up the wrong tree.
Following Edwina and Anthony’s non-wedding, Queen Charlotte is taken aback in one scene when her husband, King George III (James Fleet), bursts into the room in a daze, and Edwina steps forward to comfort him.
Is Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story a prequel?
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a prequel – but in actual fact, it’s a little bit more complicated than that.
The narrative is delivered in two parts: the present, with Golda playing the Queen Charlotte we all know and love, and the past, with India playing the monarch in her earlier years.
The performance alternates between past and present, offering further insight on how Queen Charlotte and her contemporaries, notably Lady Danbury and Violet, Dowager Viscountess Bridgerton, came to be the sophisticated pillars that they became.
Adjoa Andoh and Ruth Gemmell reprise their roles as Lady Danbury and Violet, respectively, while Arsema Thomas and Connie Jenkins-Greig play their younger counterparts.
Hugh Sachs also returns as Brimsley, the Queen’s faithful secretary, with Sam Clemmett as the footman in his younger years.
Corey Mylchreest plays the youthful King George III, while Michelle Fairley plays his dominating mother, Princess Augusta.
When could Bridgerton season 3 come out?
While there is no set release date for Bridgerton season three, it is expected to arrive on Netflix later this year.
The show’s first season began on Christmas Day 2020, followed by season two on March 25, 2022.
The third installment, which will centre on the love story of Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton), has concluded filming, so it’s just a matter of time until fans can see the new episodes.
With a fourth season officially committed, there are plenty of stories from the world of Bridgerton yet to be told.
Bridgerton is available to watch on Netflix. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story premieres on Thursday May 4 on Netflix.
