Mark Wright’s BBC sitcom was “only ever intended for one season,” according to reports.
In recent weeks, his wife Michelle Keegan has had enormous success on Netflix with her compelling novel Fool Me Once.
Mark went on an adventurous trip with his brother Josh Wright and his father, ‘Big’ Mark Wright, on the BBC’s A Wright Family Holiday in June of last year.
Throughout the six episodes, the trio faced a number of physically demanding obstacles, such as spending the night 400 metres below, skydiving, cliff leaping into frigid water, and bungee jumping.
In an Instagram post at the time, Mark, 37, stated that creating the show was ‘hands down the finest experience of my life’, adding that it’means more to me than any other before’.
In a report published in The Sun, a source stated that the series was ‘always going to be a suck-it-and-see job’, with the publication claiming that it had been ‘axed’.
‘If it went down well with audiences and got healthy viewing figures, the BBC would have been tempted to maybe explore another series. The Wrights would have been up for it, but it wasn’t to be,’ the insider said.
The TV source added that ‘the consolation’ is that ‘the BBC is still keen to work with them’, claiming that the trio ‘could be offered another type of show in the future’.
According to the publication, a spokesperson for the BBC said: ‘A Wright Family Holiday was commissioned as a one off.’
A spokeswoman for Mark confirmed that A Wright Family Holiday was not cancelled and was always scheduled to run for one season.
Mark has recently been gushing with delight over his wife Michelle, 36, and her leading role in the Netflix drama Fool Me Once.
Following the drama’s release on New Year’s Day, he said on Instagram that he couldn’t express how ‘glad and pleased’ he was for her.
‘It’s hard for people outside to see the work that goes into an actor’s life behind the scenes to get to the top. People might think that it comes easy, they just roll up and do their job but it couldn’t be further from the truth,’ he wrote.
‘Watching her nerves leaving the soap that made her over a decade ago, trying so hard to be taken seriously as an actor, moving into big serious dramas as her career has moved forward has been such an important thing to her.’
Mark stressed how many hours Michelle spent ‘attacking emotional and mentally draining scenes’, being away from her loved ones and facing rejection, while also worrying that her performance would be ‘slandered’ in the media.
‘To see how FOOL ME ONCE is being loved all round the world and how Michelle’s performance is being praised makes me feel so proud and even emotional,’ he added.
‘This is your time babe, this is what it’s all been for, keep shining girl your biggest fan is right here behind you, all the way!!’
A Wright Family Holiday is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
