Brenda Edwards of Loose Women said that until she announced her divorce, her acquaintances had no idea she was married.
The X Factor judge, 54, appears to have kept her personal life and romance out of the public, as well as out of chats with her pals.
Brenda was married to her ex-husband Patrick for over three decades, but the two had completely different lifestyles, she said on Tuesday’s episode.
Speaking to Coleen Nolan, Janet Street-Porter and Christine Lampard, Brenda began: ‘I was married for 27 years, it was only when I got divorced after 27 years that my friends that had been friends for 17 years found out that I was even married.’
At the shock of her co-stars, she went on: ‘I had a ring on and everything, but they were just like, “What you’re married?”
‘Why’s that so hard to believe? First and foremost.’
Brenda joked that she hid her spouse in the cellar in response to Coleen’s astonished query, before clarifying why her pals had no knowledge.
‘I don’t really go for people that are in the industry, because I’ve said, I want to talk about something different than the industry, so he wasn’t in the industry.
‘Obviously, in the musical theatre world, evening time is when you do all the socialising.
‘He was in bed because he’s got to get up for work in the morning, so it kind of worked.’
She added: ‘I’m not that person to put that out, there’s enough that we talk about, I want to keep somethings for myself.
‘And that relationship I want to keep to myself, I just don’t want to parade that person.’
Talking about relationships, Brenda later told the panel that she’d ‘instigate a sleep divorce’ before ‘an intimate relationship’, as they discussed partners sleeping in separate beds.
‘I just put my cards from the table and don’t see anything wrong with that, it’s important for me to have some sleep and for me for my partner to have some sleep,’ she added.
Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV1.
