The One Show’s Gethin Jones baffled Lizzo by his question about her friendship with Harry Styles last night.
The flautist, rapper, singer and dancer appeared on The One Show last night via a video link ahead of the release of her upcoming album, and days after performing with a $55,000 (£43,000) flute on the Met Gala red carpet.
Last month she surprised Coachella fans by joining Harry on stage to perform a couple of songs, including Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive, and Gethin put Lizzo on the spot by asking her: ‘How come you’re mates with Harry Styles? What’s going on there?’
Not really knowing where to go from there, taken aback, Lizzo laughed and replied: ‘What did you say?’
Gethin apologised, explaining: ‘Sorry, that was the English terminology.
‘Have you become friends with Harry Styles recently?’
While awkward laughter could be heard in The One Show studio with fellow guest Sara Cox seen chuckling away, Lizzo hesitated before clarifying: ‘Um, not recently. We’ve been cool for a minute.
‘[Since] he covered my song and then I covered his song, we’ve been friends with each other – and fast friends.’
Once the interview ended, Gethin brought up the uncomfortable moment and joked: ‘“Cool for a minute.” We’ll be ‘cool for a minute’ with Sara very shortly.’
Lizzo and Harry have been famously close for years, necking back tequila together at 2019 Brit Awards, and joining each other on stage on a few occasions.
The One Show continues tonight at 7pm on BBC One.
