Ella Toone characterised her grandmother as her “greatest admirer,” revealing her grandmother’s unwavering trust in her.
The Lioness was a member of the famed England squad that won the Women’s Euros 2022, inspiring a whole new generation of players and creating a party atmosphere throughout the country for days afterwards.
While Ella is now considered as a hero by football fans across the country, it was her grandma who was her first admirer and even put money on her granddaughter’s future success.
Ella said on Good Morning Britain on Thursday that her grandmother bet on her when she was six years old that she would grow up to play for England.
‘My nan’s always been my biggest supporter,’ she told hosts Ben Shephard and Katee Garraway.
‘She bet when I was extremely tiny that one day I’d play for England, so she always believed in me from the beginning,’ she explained, adding that she was ‘around six.’
Ben and Kate couldn’t believe it, with Kate gasping audibly as Ella made the remark.
When asked if her grandmother had received her earnings, she said, ‘Of course she did!’
And after receiving what had to be a “quite big prize,” Ella stated, “I shared it with my brother and cousin.”
Ella and her teammates, including captain Leah Williamson and I’m A Celebrity winner Jill Scott, gave delight to the UK last year when they defeated Germany 2-1 in the final at Wembley Stadium.
In the nail-biting encounter, the striker scored one goal and Chloe Kelly scored the other.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV
