Nadia Sawalha’s sex life was revealed to the Loose Women panel in an unexpected way after she detailed her troubles using one kind of contraception while a touch tipsy.
On Thursday’s broadcast, the ladies were debating a recent research from the University of Oxford, which found that all types of hormonal contraception, including the pill, implant, or intrauterine device (IUD or coil), raised the risk of breast cancer by 23 to 32%.
When it came time to speak about the story, the ladies debated whether they would have modified their prior methods of contraception now that they had this knowledge.
Nadia, 58, on the other hand, said it was’sad we haven’t moved on’ and created better birth control methods for women.
Nadia went into depth about her experience with the diaphragm after discussing how she took the pill for a decade and then utilised the sponge.
‘You had to fill it with sperm inside, you had to bend it, and let go of it at just the right time and pop it around the cervix…try doing that when you’ve had a couple of glasses of chardonnay,’ she said.
While all of this was going on, Judi Love, 42, seems to be at a loss for words.
Nadia, on the other hand, didn’t appear to notice and proceeded.
‘Nine times out of ten it would end up at the other side of the room, especially if you were enthusiastic.’
She then joked the device was like using a children’s pop-up tent.
Judi, clearly curious, then asked Nadia whether she had ever used the coil.
‘Oh the coil! If you got the man’s doo-da and said “we are going to take this piece of copper wire with plastic bits and squeeze it right up the middle by someone you’ve never met before with no anaesthetic and not even as much as a cup of tea and we will poing it through…we would not still be having this,’ she said.
‘I loved the coil and didn’t have to worry when having sex for years, but when it went in, the pain went on for days and it was so bad and it was just as bad when it was taken out.’
She added: ‘Our contraception feels medieval. There is not enough money put into research for female health.’
Nadia said last year that she underwent a hysterectomy after ‘worrying herself sick’ over symptoms she was experiencing.
She advised women to “bite the bullet and get yourself seen” if they were concerned about their health after being given the “all clear.”
