James Norton, star of the last season of Happy Valley, Sally Wainwright’s groundbreaking police drama, has given a sneak peek into what viewers may anticipate from the episode.
Millions of Happy Valley viewers will be glued to their screens on February 5 in the hopes that Sergeant Catherine Cawood survives the series finale.
Since Norton’s villain Tommy Lee Royce escaped jail in the most recent episode, he will almost certainly find his son Ryan and cause mayhem on the way.
Sarah Lancashire and Norton were handed the ending screenplay before the rest of the cast and were asked to keep it secret until everyone had a chance to read it.
The cast also shot alternate endings, so no one is really sure how things will finish out.
‘Everyone I’ve spoken to who has read it is like “phew”,’ Norton told BBC.
‘It’s just great. It’s Sally [Wainwright, writer] letting rip in her wonderful way. Going against expectation, but also giving you what you want. I loved reading it.
He added: ‘There’s also a little bit of melancholy tinge there because it’s the end of a very significant chapter for everyone.’
He’s not revealing anything, but fans have come up with lots of speculation, with many assuming Catherine will perish because life is a terrible beast.
We were reminded of her impending retirement in the most recent episode, and it would be especially cruel if she were to pass just days before taking out for the Himalayas on her dream vacation, where she could finally relax and enjoy her retirement to the fullest.
Some others suspect that Ryan is truly planning to assassinate Tommy.
Yes, both explanations are possible, but one thing is certain: there will be blood.
Happy Valley continues Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
