Some Doctor Who spin-offs are in the works, as confirmed by Russell T. Davies.
The showrunner who oversaw Doctor Who’s return to the BBC in 2005 is back in command as the programme enters a new age, giving Whovians even more cause to be optimistic about the show’s future thanks to Disney+’s support.
Russell had enormous ideas for how Doctor Who may expand, admitting he frequently had “massive jealousy” for the way Star Trek changed itself “from an old archival programme into something amazing.”
He told GQ: ‘So I thought – with no criticism whatsoever towards the people who were running it at the time, because they were running it within the BBC’s measures – it was time for the next stage for Doctor Who.
‘I thought the streaming platforms are ready, the spin-offs are ready; I always believed in spin-offs when I was there. I did Torchwood as a spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures as a spin-off.
More money and creative leeway to create more tales promises to alter that.
‘It wasn’t my idea, it was the BBC’s notion to go for a streamer [Disney+] to invest in the show worldwide, which I completely agree with. We’re not on the budget level with Star Wars and the Marvel shows,’ he insisted.
“It’s much better now than it was before. It’s a fact that every single television set in the world costs millions. It’s more than I’ve ever had to deal with, but we can’t discuss finances since we’re not “on that Star Wars or Star Trek level.”
Ncuti Gatwa will take over the TARDIS after three episodes starring David Tennant and Catherine Tate as the 14th Doctor and Donna Noble celebrate the show’s 60th anniversary.
On Ncuti, Russell added: ‘He’s so unbelievably stunning. I can’t wait for you to see him. He just lifts your hair off your head. He’s beautiful. Absolutely beautiful, in every sense. So, very excited.’
Doctor Who is returning to BBC1 in 2023.
