We honestly couldn’t fathom anybody else portraying Luther than Idris Elba, but did you realise he almost didn’t win the renowned role at all?
We couldn’t believe it, either.
The synopsis for the latest movie adaptation Luther: The Fallen Sun reads: ‘Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.’
After five highly successful BBC episodes, the film will continue the narrative of troubled rogue Detective Chief Inspector John Luther.
Before the premiere of The Fallen Sun, writer Neil Cross told Metro.co.uk that he pondered not delivering the script to the Bastille Day megastar, 50.
‘This is one of those things where I wake up at 4 in the morning with my heart beating because it could have been so different,’ he told us.
‘The process of casting depends on so many random elements, and the truth is we had a list of actors, but I almost stopped the script from going to Idris.’
Cross revealed that before Luther debuted in 2010, all of the main UK networks tried to get the Obsessed actor to appear or star in a series, but he turned down all of the offers.
‘The producer at the time said “we should send it to him”, but I was like “he’s going to say no,”‘ he added.
‘It seemed to me to invite heartbreak to send to Idris just to get the inevitable no.
‘It went to Idris on a Thursday, he was in Puerto Rico, and on my Saturday morning he rang and he read the script he liked it and we had one of those once-in-a-lifetime conversations.
‘There is an alternative world where another actor played Luther, but it’s not a universe that I want to step into.’
We couldn’t be more in agreement!
Luther: The Fallen Sun is available to stream on Netflix.
