Greg Rutherford expressed his disappointment at not being able to perform on Dancing On Ice owing to a’significant’ injury.
The 37-year-old Olympian had to withdraw from the ITV programme hours before the finale due to a’really serious mishap’ during preparations.
He has kept his supporters updated on his condition on social media, revealing that he was “sewn up” following the event and needed to visit a specialist and have scans in hospital.
In his most recent post, Greg expressed his disappointment that he was unable to skate the Bolero with his professional partner Vanessa James and regretted ‘what could have been’ in the final.
Alongside a clip of him and Vanessa practicing the routine, he wrote on Instagram: ‘Something that I really wish I could have performed… #Bolero
‘I’m almost 36 hours since the injury and watching the videos of what could have been. It’s bloody hard to take at this point as I know we could have shown something exciting and new with our final performances.
‘Of course the Bolero isn’t a given and I’ll post our showcase at some point too… I haven’t shown the end as I’m determined to actually perform it with Vanessa one day for everyone to see.
‘I’m really proud of what we achieved on the show. This take was from Saturday morning and we were marking for the double twist… the full program was truly beautiful. I’m a bit heart broken at the moment.’
Teasing he could reunite with Vanessa, he asked his 188K followers: ‘Do you think me and Vanessa should get together again and perform it live one day?’
Earlier this week, Greg said he was ‘very sore and very tired’ on his Instagram Stories as he opened up about his hospital appointment.
Greg said: ‘Then I will know more about what’s going on and what’s happening. I’m very sore, I’m very tired. I’m going to get an early night tonight. But I cannot believe the amount of lovely messages. I’ll update everybody once I know what the next step is.’
He added in a worrying admission: ‘This is grim.’
The gold medallist had previously shared a photograph of him in bed and wrote: ‘Recovery sort of starts now… after a pretty rough first night, I’m looking forward to getting everything sorted and sewn up so I can get back to normal.
Greg had an injury just hours before the Dancing On Ice final, when Ryan Thomas and Amani Fancy won.
Vanessa wrote on Instagram: ‘Unfortunately Greg has sustained a significant injury this morning at rehearsals and won’t be able to perform tonight.
‘We are on our way to the hospital for Greg to get examined further and receive the treatment he needs.’
Greg’s fiancée, Susie Verrill, subsequently reported that Greg was in resuscitation in the hospital, a procedure used for patients who require immediate care.
‘Resus is never a fun place to be is it. There’s a lot of screaming (Not from Greg),’ she wrote, showing Greg lying on a bed with his eyes closed.
The former Olympic gold medal winner shared a video from his hospital bed in resus, paying tribute to Ryan, Adele Roberts and Miles Nazaire in the Dancing On Ice final.
‘But my message for the three incredible finalists who will be skating shortly is to have an incredible night,’ he said, adding that he was ‘devastated’ that he couldn’t take part.
After Ryan’s win, Greg shared a post on his Instagram Story describing his fellow competitor as a ‘friend for life’.
‘So prouyd of @ryanthomas84. He’s had his fair share of ups and downs during this process, so to come out winning is utterly spectacular,’ he wrote.
‘Well done brother, I’m glad I’ve got a friend for life in you.’
