Viewers on Grand Designs have expressed their displeasure with a couple’s flooring for their Hackney house.
Graeme, an architect, and his German partner Melanie travelled to Marrakech, Morocco, to design and acquire the tiles for their garage plot conversion, which was featured in the Channel 4 documentary on Wednesday.
Melanie, a graphic artist, chose a geometric pattern in brilliant blue and red hues for the tiles, which were installed on the ground floor of the home.
Fans of Kevin McCloud’s makeover show, on the other hand, did not share Graeme and Melanie’s tastes.
One X, formerly known as Twitter, user wrote alongside a horrified emoji: ‘Those tiles.’
‘Could’ve got those tiles from B and Q,’ another quipped, while a third shared: ‘Right. So they aren’t *that* stretched for funds given that they are in Marrakech collecting their custom-made tiles. Cry me a river.’
Melanie stated that she had previously created the tiles while on vacation in Marrakech, where she had also become engaged to Graeme.
‘We will walk across the tiles and think of Marrakech,’ Melanie added, referencing the proposal.
Kevin, 64, claimed in a voice-over that the cost of making and constructing the tiles in Morocco was ‘similar’ to buying them from a DIY store in the UK owing to the reduced cost of living in the North African country.
What a ugly house – imagine that red monopoly piece being erected at the end of your street.
If they had so much money why not move out of London and build something bigger and nicer?#grandDesigns

Right. So they aren’t *that* stretched for funds given that they are in Marrakech collecting their custom made tiles. Cry me a river. #granddesigns

You could buy plain white tiles and paint them yourself. #GrandDesigns

Not feeling this home at all – red brick Monopoly house where the couple are pleading poverty and importing tiles from Morocco – er – nah! #GrandDesigns pic.twitter.com/Mhi2sKyTzj

They’d save a few quid if they got their tiles from Homebase 🤷🏻♀️ #GrandDesigns

When Kevin initially arrived to the property’s site, a double garage in North London, he exclaimed, ‘Is this it? ‘Are you serious?’
Graeme, who is the father of Isla, 15, with his late partner, and Melanie, who is the mother of Indie, 13, with her late boyfriend, paid £275,000 for the site to house their blended family.
They set aside £450,000 to turn the garages into a multi-story mansion in a striking red colour.
However, the couple went over budget and spent £550,000 on the construction work, and they are now out of money, preventing them from finishing the improvements.
Graeme and Melanie still need to finish the lower levels, including the basement, and have stated that if they cannot find the cash, they will have to sell.
Grand Designs continues next Wednesday at 9pm on Channel 4.
