Fans of Gossip Girl are presently ‘losing their minds’ after a mysterious flashback photo of the original cast was released on social media.
The hit series was based on Cecily von Ziegesar’s hugely popular book series and adapted by the OC’s creators – it premiered on September 19, 2007, introducing us all to the popular high-schoolers at Constance Billard- St Jude’s, including Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively), Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford), and Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick).
To the chagrin of fans everywhere, the last episode of the original programme revealed that lonely lad Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgely) had been moonlighting as uber-blogger Gossip Girl all along.
Although it has been 11 years since we said goodbye to Serena and the gang, a flashback Instagram image of the main cast has thrown fans into a frenzy.
The caption read: ‘Welcome back, Upper East Siders. After a long time away, I see it didn’t take much time for you to dirty up the clean slates I gave you.’
Although this doesn’t give away much, hardcore fans are already convinced something special could be in the works.

‘Don’t play games…I will sue you for emotional distress…👩🏽⚖️ Is this really happening??? Please say yes,’ one person enthused.
‘Losing my mind over what this means,’ another added.
‘Screaming crying throwing up if the original cast comes back,’ a third replied.
We’ll surely be keeping an eye on this!
In terms of the show’s current comeback, HBO Max stated in January this year that it will be cancelled after two seasons.
When the reboot began in 2021, it garnered mixed reviews, and the second season is still airing.
In a statement shared on Twitter, executive producer Joshua Safran: ‘So here’s the goss: it is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce GOSSIP GIRL will not be continuing on HBO Max.
‘The EPs and I will forever be grateful to the network and studio for their faith and support; the writers for their devious brains and dexterous talent; the superstar cast for being the greatest of collaborators and friends; and the crew for their hard work, dedication, and love for the project.’
The screenwriter stressed that ‘this was honestly the greatest set I ever worked on, top to bottom’, while expressing his hope that Gossip Girl could continue if the creators are able to find a home for it with another network.
‘A big thank you to all the GG fans around the world. You’re the reason we came back in the first place, and who knows, maybe the reason we will meet again. Much love.’
Gossip Girl is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
