The stars of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia have revealed that they were banned from saying the word ‘teabagging’ in an early episode of the show.

Show creator Rob McElhenney, along with writers and stars Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day, were told by network bosses that they couldn’t use the word in the episode The Gang Exploits A Miracle, despite the fact that they were talking explicity about teabagging in the scene.

Speaking on The Always Sunny Podcast at a time where the show is currently on it’s 15th season, Rob, Charlie and Glenn discussed series two’s fan favourite episode which introduces recurring character Rickety Cricket.

In the instalment, the gang – made up of genuinely terrible people – recall how they used to torture Cricket in high school by ‘teabagging’ him and sharing the photographs around.

If you don’t know what teabagging is, well, another way the gang describe it is ‘balls-to-the-chin’, so that should be a good enough description.

In the latest Always Sunny Podcast, Glenn revealed that the bosses at FX didn’t want them to use the word teabag, which he found ‘so perplexing’.

‘The network would not let us say teabagging on the show, so we submitted “balls to the chin” to them, and they were like “Yeah that’s fine”.’

Considering all the other awful things the characters to do each other, Charlie agreed it was ‘a strange thing’ that teabagging was where the bosses drew the line.

Glenn suggested that perhaps it was ‘slightly less offensive somehow’ to describe the act rather than use the known term, and admitted: ‘Now, I think, if we wanted to put teabagging in the show they wouldn’t give a s**t. They would definitely let us put it in now.’

However, dedicated Sunny fans will notice that, in The Gang Exploits A Miracle, Mac does remind Cricket that they used to teabag him in high school – and uses the actual term.

While they also use the term ‘balls to the chin’, the gang managed to slip the word teabagging in there, too – so maybe the network came to some sort of compromise.

It’s not the first time the stars of It’s Always Sunny have spoken about clashing with the FX bosses in the early days of the show.

Last month, Glenn, Rob and Charlie revealed they almost quit in the first series following a row with FX over a ‘paedophile priest character’.

Charlie Got Molested is the seventh episode of the first series, which centres on the gang’s old gym teacher being accused of molesting several of the boys in their class.

However, the ‘paedophile’ character was first written to be a Catholic priest – not a teacher.

While it’s revealed in the end that the teacher was innocent, the bosses at FX were adamant that they did not want to have a Catholic priest accused of molestation causing a row that almost led the stars to quit.

‘They got a little uncomfortable with the idea that a Catholic priest was molesting you guys – even though he isn’t molesting any of the kids in the episode.’

He added: ‘We almost quit the show over it! We were about to.’

Charlie interjected by saying: ‘That would have been dumb’, to which Glenn agreed: ‘So dumb!’

The Always Sunny Podcast is airing now on Spotify, Google and Apple Podcasts.
