A GB News broadcaster has been strongly chastised for making a crude joke about Prince Harry, prompting demands for formal complaints to Ofcom.
During an episode of his channel programme, journalist Patrick Christys hosted guest Charles Rae, the former royal correspondent for The Sun, to examine the royal family and their portrayal in Netflix’s The Crown.
After asking Rae what he thought of the impending sixth season of the programme depicting Princess Diana’s murder, the host then brought up what the Duke of Sussex earlier remarked when asked for his thoughts on the historical drama by James Corden.
‘What I find interesting about this was this was just before – I think this flew under the radar a bit for people. Just before Harry and Meghan did their Netflix thing, Harry did a thing with James Corden,’ Christys began.
‘I tell you what… oh gosh. If you had one fake gun and one fake bullet and you lined up Harry and James Corden I don’t know which one you’d go for.’
Rae chuckled at Christys’ shocking remark, before the GB News presenter continued.
Describing Corden as a ‘lovely chap’, he added: ‘And he was saying to him, “How do you feel about The Crown?” And he said, “Well I like The Crown. I don’t mind The Crown, because it’s obviously not real.” He was having a pop at people doing news broadcasts and slamming them and presenting certain things as facts.
‘And I thought, “That’s not really true, is it Harry?” I mean, it became obvious why he said that shortly afterwards because he signed a multi-million pound deal with Netflix and The Crown is on Netflix.
‘However, I thought well, people take what happens in The Crown as fact, don’t they? So it’ll be interesting to see what he makes of what they do about his mum’s death.’
Following the airing of the GB News show during which Christys made his statement regarding Prince Harry, the social networking site X (previously Twitter) received a flood of shocked responses.
Finding Freedom co-author Omid Scobie wrote: ‘Unlike this country’s quality news broadcasters, it seems you can get away with saying just about anything on @GBNews – including sick jokes about wanting to shoot people.
‘And people wonder why Prince Harry has been so concerned about his security in the UK…’
Someone else said: ‘Will @Ofcom act? Or sit on its hands and indulge GB News hate speech yet again? Clear breach of its code. Anyone can complain, only takes a few minutes,’ including a link to Ofcom’s online complaints form.
‘This is disgusting,’ someone else stated, while another added: ‘@Ofcom this is shameful and dangerous!!’
