Conleth Hill and other cast members shared the vociferous reactions of viewers to the last season of Game of Thrones.
Conleth, who is practically unrecognisable outside of his outfit, played Varys, a significant character in Westeros and a favourite of the audience.
Fans who seen the Irish actor’s expression during a read-through in 2019 were not happy with his character’s premature demise.
Even though Conleth is a talented actor, it’s difficult to disguise the disappointment in that season, especially after all the anticipation.
Season eight of Game of Thrones has by far the worst ratings on the review website Rotten Tomatoes, with a dismal 30% viewer score and a 55% critic score.
Cast members have discussed their complicated feelings about the programme in the four years after it ended, and now Conleth has said he was “frustrated.”
Master of whispers, Varys, was one of the few cast members who survived from series one right the way through – although not quite to the very end.
The eunuch was clever and cunning, with a team of informants who brought him the secrets of King’s Landing to help him manipulate those in power.
However, this high intelligence did not always serve those above him as his double-crossing nature would eventually be his demise.
Voicing a common complaint levied at the final season, Conleth told The Times: ‘I felt that last series was a bit rushed. I was inconsolable, but now I’m fine about it.’
Fans who liked the Spider had conflicting feelings about Varys’ shocking demise, but it wasn’t the only move made in the last season that generated negative feedback.
‘I thought I’d done something wrong. Right up until the last two series, I had no complaints at all,’ Conleth shared.
‘I just felt frustrated with the last couple of series because Varys wasn’t the all-knowing character he had been. I think the writers wanted to do one thing to end it and the studio HBO wanted to do another.’
During the videotaped table read, the two-time Olivier Award winner’s stone-faced expression and real hurt were clear indications of his displeasure.
Conleth neatly folded his screenplay in half and threw it on the table, then leaned back and crossed his arms while Emilia Clarke delivered Daenerys Targaryen’s damning comments to Lord Varys.
Emilia gave him a compassionate look while Lena Headey, who portrayed Cersei Lannister, chuckled a little to herself as the narration described the character’s demise.
Having witnessed the previous season, we can’t say that we blame Conleth for not looking up while taking in the terrible news with his eyes fixed front of him.
