Willow fans were devastated when the show was cancelled after only one season.
The fantasy epic will get a fresh lease on life on the streaming platform in October 2020, marking Lucasfilm’s first non-Star Wars production in five years.
The first film followed Warwick Davis’s Willow Ufgood, a Nelwyn dwarf compelled to rescue a newborn called Elora Danan from a wicked queen (Jean Marsh).
Willow was guarded by a swordsman played by Val Kilmer in the film, which also starred Joanne Whalley, Billy Barty, and Kevin Pollak.
The followup series, however, will not return for season two, according to Deadline.
According to the site, the programme was cancelled because it lacked “the zeitgeist cultural effect” of the original film on which it was based.
The shocking revelation elicited a mixed reaction from fans, with some adopting the hashtag #cancelthegays.
One person wrote: ‘Absolutely beside myself about this news. The Willow movie was one of my absolute FAVORITES as a kid, and this show brought me so much joy. The #Willow story deserves more, these characters deserve more.’
Another added: ‘End the curse. let our stories live.’
Sound designer David W Collins tweeted: ‘Sad to learn it’s over, but so, so happy that season 1 happened. I will be forever grateful.
This was pure joy to work on, and I absolutely love the cast and crew. Huge shout-out to all #Willow questies, and everyone at Lucasfilm. It was a dream come true!’
The show’s synopsis read: ‘It has been more than 20 years since Queen Bavmorda was defeated.
‘An unlikely group of six heroes sets off on a dangerous quest to places far beyond their home where they must face their inner demons and come together to save their world from the Gales.’
Willow is available to stream on Disney Plus.
