The wait is almost over for Frasier fans, as the reboot is slated to launch in precisely one month, with a trailer promising “all new hang-ups.”
Kelsey Grammer will return as everyone’s favourite radio shrink, while Peri Gilpin and Bebe Neuwirth will appear momentarily as Roz Doyle and Lilith Sternin, respectively.
Although David Hyde Pierce and Jane Leeves are not returning as Niles Crane and Daphne Moon, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Jack Cutmore-Scott, Toks Olagundoye, and Jess Salgueiro have joined the ensemble.
The revival will see the doctor return to Boston many years after he left Cheers, and will premiere on Paramount+ on October 12 with a double bill, with episodes also showing on CBS.
Jeff Greenberg, who worked as casting director for Cheers, Frasier, and the current revival, teased what we may anticipate by praising Nicholas’ performance as Alan.
Speaking ahead of the 30-year anniversary of the spin-off, he told us: ‘It was really exciting. My history is so ingrained in the whole project. There’s three people that worked on Cheers, Frasier and now the new Frasier – Kelsey Grammer, Jim Burrows [director], and me.
‘I’m very invested in the whole life of Frasier Crane. I personally was a bit misty eyed, because there’s just such history there. It went great, Kelsey slipped right into the park as if he never stopped. Like riding a bike, he was Frasier again.’
‘The cast is just outstanding, and every one of them really stepped up and did a great job,’ he continued, before hailing the Only Fools and Horses icon.
‘I’ve never worked with [Nicholas] before and don’t really know his work as well as everyone in the UK. He is a revelation, he is so fantastic. He is really outstanding in this part, he is truly hilarious.
‘I really wasn’t as familiar with him as I could have been, and he just bowled me over. He’s just incredible.’
Jeff was in charge of casting every speaking position on all three comedies, and he disclosed that thousands of people put in videos to be a part of Frasier’s present-day tale, with over 7,000 for just one role alone.
He defined the next episodes as the “third act of Frasier’s story,” saying that “in each iteration, it’s Frasier surrounded by a colourful group of people in his life with a specific job.” And this one is no exception.
‘It’s going to be all new people. Kelsey Grammer is the only holdover from the last Frasier. He’ll be around all new people in his life, and he’ll have a different job.
‘What I can tell you is, the original Frasier, the impetus of that whole story was Frasier reconnecting with his father, because they had a bad relationship and Frasier really wanted to make it work. This story, the starting point is Frasier wanting to do that with his son.
‘They have a bad relationship and Frasier wants to be a better father, the way he wanted to be a better son in the last one.’
Frasier premieres on October 12 on Paramount+.
