On Wednesday’s Lorraine, Elliot Page spoke out about his connection with his mother.
The Juno star, 36, appeared on the famous morning programme to discuss his book biography Pageboy and praised his mother, Martha Phillpotts, for learning about the LGBTQ+ community.
Elliot had stated that Martha ‘pushed him away’ when he attempted to come out to her.
Earlier this month, Elliot said of Martha: ‘Ultimately, so much of it came, I think, from a place of concern and love and wanting to protect you from the scary things in the world.’
He added on The View: ‘Now, she couldn’t be more supportive of her son and I think in so many ways is relieved because she really saw me struggle a lot.’
Speaking on Lorraine Kelly midweek, the actress reiterated the idea, stating, ‘It hasn’t always been easy for her.’ She came out as a lesbian in 2014 and as transgender in 2020.
He went on: ‘It’s been a journey, but people do grow and change and educate themselves and my mother’s done that. I’m so lucky to have her.’
Elliot also touched upon the ways in which he deals with other people’s toxic views, saying: ‘So much of my life I found it very difficult to see a future.
‘This would have been impossible before – to have the space in my mind to be creative to this degree to be comfortable enough to even sit with myself to complete a task like writing a book.’
He continued: ‘Of course, there’s the backlash, for me it’s all about community – my friends, my trans pals.’
Elliot writes on everything from his Oscar-nominated film career to his transsexual adventures in Pageboy.
The actor is most known for his appearances in Juno (for which he earned an Oscar nomination), Inception, Hard Candy, and My Days of Mercy.
