RuPaul’s Drag Race UK delivered the mother of all British crossovers with an EastEnders themed challenge – and it was as epic and hilarious as could have ever hoped for.
They didn’t just become drags, they became total draaags.
From the dodgy parody remakes of Walford faves, to the X-rated new name of the beloved pub, the drag queen competition embraced every camp element they could – as well as all the drama, Mama.
They even managed to rope in some EastEnders faces to help out.
If you missed it, you missed out – but don’t worry, we at Metro.co.uk have rounded up the best bits for the megafans of Albert Square.
Here are just some of the best moments of the show you might have missed…
The shady EastEnders character rewrites
We knew we were in for something ridiculous by the names of the characters in the acting challenge alone – throwing serious shade at their EastEnders counterparts.
For ‘BeastEnders’, the leading characters were:
Skat Slater – a version of Kat Slater who was described as ‘short tempered and dressed in ill-fitting leopard print’.
Thot Bottom – inspired loosely by Dot Cotton. A Christian, chain-smoking gossip queen who seems older and prudish – but deep down she’s a horny thot.
Karen Bitchell – Based on Sharon Mitchell – who has big boobs, big attitude and even bigger hair. Very dramatic and thinks she’s very glamorous – but she’s actually a bit ropey.
Phyllis Bitchell – A female version of Phil Mitchell with a rough voice and even rougher attitude.
So rude but seriously funny. Sorry, you four, you’ve been dragged in more ways than one.
Natalie Cassidy giving an acting lesson
Natalie Cassidy knows a thing or two about life on Albert Square so who better to give an acting masterclass?!
Between the underage pregnancies, lesbian love affairs and failed marriages, Sonia really is part of the EastEnders furniture.
It turns out she’s iconic here too – getting the queens to scream out Rickaaaay as a warm-up exercise before testing them on their ability to show emotions.
We reckon she would be a blast down the pub of a night out, and though she couldn’t be on the show herself (thanks Covid), her segment was one for the books.
Danny Dyer being replaced by a mannequin
In the wake of coronavirus putting strict rules into place over on Soapland – including actors sharing a snog through perspex – Danny Dyer was unable to take part in this week’s challenge as (presumably) planned.
So they drafted in a dummy called Mickayyy for the exact same role.
As Skat, Bimini explained: ‘Coz of lockdown, Danny Dyer can’t play him no more – so I’m left with this plank of wood instead.’
‘… He ain’t much of a talker is he?’ Thot (Ellie Diamond) responded.
It says a lot about an actor to rise above a wooden partner, and this was a hilarious compromise with the team doing the best they could.
He even appeared on the judges’ panel afterwards – after being caught having it off with Thot on CCTV.
Lawrence Chaney’s Shirley Carter wig
Just look at it. It’s actual perfection.
And to be fair to Lawrence, if there’s a female equivalent of Phil Mitchell on the show… it’s gonna be Shirley Carter.
RuPaul recreating the ‘You ain’t my muvva’ moment
It’s always fun when Ru gets in on the fun, and so when she decided to recreate Zoe and Kat Slater’s ‘you ain’t my muvva’ speech on the runway with Bimini, we knew we were in for a treat.
Did she nail the execution of the line? Probably not, but regardless it was still a funny moment and really rounded up this ridiculously wonderful episode for the camp paradise it was.
RuPaul’s Drag Race UK airs Thursdays at 7pm on BBC Three on iPlayer (UK) and WOW Presents Plus (Rest of World).
