Denise Welch has revealed additional information about her next theatrical role as Queen Elizabeth II, and she hasn’t ruled out playing a Geordie.
The Loose Women host, 65, sparked outrage when it was revealed that she will play the princess for one night only on December 4 at the Eventim Apollo in London as part of the forthcoming musical Diana: The Musical.
The musical, set in 1996, will see a recently divorced Diana, played by Kerry Ellis, reflect on her past as she remembers her 19-year-old self (Maiya Quansah-Breed), who caught the nation’s attention.
‘It’s fairly camp and it’s quite fun, but it’s extremely respectful,’ Denise exclaimed on Thursday’s Loose Women.
‘There are some things in life you get offered and you’re like “I’ve just got to do that” and so it went viral and apparently broke the internet which is fantastic.’
Like the rest of us, co-presenter Linda Robson was curious whether Denise would be portraying the Queen with a Geordie accent.
‘No, I’m not going to be the Queen because I’m an actress, Linda!’ Dense jokingly snapped, before adding: ‘Although a Geordie queen might be quite novel and a little bit camp.
‘We’ll wait and see. I’m very excited about it.’
She also voiced her fears, adding: ‘I’ve never played an actual living character before so it will be a challenge… I’m going to sing in my own little way.’
Denise, you may stop now! We’re already excited to see it!
The former Waterloo Road actress is following in the footsteps of industry heavyweights Dame Helen Mirren and Olivia Colamn, both of whom have previously played Queen Elizabeth II in high-profile movies.
Dame Helen dominated the awards season with her performance in The Queen, taking her both an Oscar and a Bafta.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12pm on ITV1.
