Warning: spoilers ahead for Good Omens season 2.
Since the release of season 2 of Good Omens, one question has been on fans’ lips all across the world: will the show return for season 3?
There have been several social media pleas for a renewal at Amazon Prime Video, with writer Neil Gaiman even openly addressing the idea with fans on Tumblr.
Michael Sheen, who plays Aziraphale, and production designer Michael Ralph were both questioned about the series’ bright future.
Throughout season two, the connection between Aziraphale and Crowley (David Tennant) grew to levels not seen since the beginning of time, culminating in a troubled kiss in the conclusion.
So, what would it take to bring Good Omens back for additional episodes?
‘That’s in the hands of the audience,’ Michael stressed. ‘If people watch it and like it, then there’ll be a season three – it’s as simple as that.
The actor continued: ‘We all hope that that will be the case, but we’ll have to wait and see and just hope that people really enjoy and appreciate what we’ve done in season two.’
Michael, the production designer, indicated that in his experience, he can tell if a film or TV programme has a happy or unhappy staff by watching it… and in this situation, it was undoubtedly the former, he stated.
‘It’s all about the details. It’s all about the care. It’s all about that extra bit, and I believe that there’s so much love and detail put into the show and depth and inspiration that it’s a real place,’ he shared.
‘I think that that will work again and I believe everybody that worked on it wants to do it all over again. I know I definitely do. I don’t believe it’s finished.’
Michael acknowledged that while everything ‘runs its course’, he was once told that ‘no creative endeavour is ever complete – it’s just abandoned’ – and he believes that to be true.
Addressing the future of Good Omens, he added: ‘I don’t think this is ready to leave. I think this is ready to continue, and I know it will come to its close. So I’m looking forward to whatever develops and I will have to use Neil’s term here… and you’ll have to wait and see.’
On tumblr, author Neil – who co-wrote the Good Omens novel with the late Terry Pratchett – was questioned if a third season was in the works, given that Amazon hasn’t formally greenlit it yet.
‘It won’t be confirmed unless enough people watch Season 2 to make Amazon happy. And it’s strike season, which makes everything harder,’ he answered in response.
‘But obviously Season 3 is all planned and plotted and, if I get to make it, will take the story and the people in it we care about to a satisfying end. If I wasn’t on strike I’d be writing it currently. Our set is still standing in a studio in Bathgate and we would all love to get back there and finish the story in the way Terry and I plotted, long ago.’
Neil also stated that he would not want to end the story in the middle of it, and he verified that there are hints for season three in the season two introductory sequence.
With that stated, we’re hoping – and expecting – to hear about a renewal at some time in the future.
