Fans of Comic Relief were delighted to see Sir Tony Robinson reprising his role as Baldrick.
In case you missed it, Baldrick is the name of various fictitious characters in the long-running BBC historical comedy television series Blackadder.
Each one is Edmund Blackadder’s servant and sidekick, as well as a counterbalance for the main character.
Sir Tony played Blackadder’s servant and sidekick from 1983 to 1989, as well as in a number of later specials, for the first time in more than 20 years for this year’s Red Nose Day cause.
At 76, the actor proved he’s still got it by reading a Cbeebies bedtime story written by Richard Curtis while dressed in his ragged garb.
‘Weird how dressing Tony Robinson up as Baldrick again makes him look 40 years younger?!’, one stunned viewer tweeted during the show.
Agreeing, another complimented: ‘Baldrick looks like he hasn’t aged a bit’.
‘Baldrick! How I have missed you!’, exclaimed another.
Another quipped: ‘Baldrick reading a bedtime story is something I never realised I needed’.
‘That was joyous! Tony Robinson hasn’t lost it and still gives a brilliant performance as Baldrick. Plus those drawings were incredible, I want to have them all!’, one fan praised after the star read out a Blackadder version of Cinderella.
But, the segment did not go down well with everyone.
Others thought the re-enactment wasn’t ‘funny,’ while others thought the much-loved figure should’ve been left in the past.
‘Jesus. Leave Baldrick and Blackadder where they were funniest’, one blasted.
‘Who ok’d this Baldrick bit? Because gang, it’s not giving…like, at all’, another penned.
‘Didn’t really get that baldrick thing lol. Guess it’s not my era’, tweeted another confused viewer.
Sir Tony told Radio Times before of the Blackadder comeback that it was “terribly thrilling,” especially because it was for a good cause.
‘To do this for Comic Relief, a charity I’ve had a close relationship with from its beginnings, has made it doubly good.’
Comic Relief is airing on BBC One and available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
