Chris O’Dowd is the latest celebrity to criticise the Irish accent spoof on Saturday Night Live, which has been heavily criticised.
Last week’s broadcast of the long-running show, presented by Wednesday star Jenna Ortega, stirred outrage with a comedy parodying the Oscars 2023.
In it, Mario Lopez and Maria Menounos impersonated celebrities, including Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson from The Banshees of Inisherin, who were portrayed by Mikey Day and Molly Kearns, respectively.
The actors are asked, “How do you feel about your prospects tonight?” to which the comedians respond with excessively fabricated, difficult-to-understand accents.
The response to their attempts to answer the question was, “Wow, and they haven’t even started drinking yet!” as the fake actors retreated.
Colin, 46, personally mentioned the comedy during the Academy Oscars, and fellow Irish actor Chris, who rose to prominence on The It Crowd, has a notion about it.
When he was attending the SXSW Festival in Austin, the 43-year-old Bridesmaids actor admitted he had not yet seen the sketch, but had heard it ‘wasn’t fantastic.’
‘I can’t share any thoughts on it because I haven’t watched it. I will do,’ he continued, before adding: ‘I know most of the SNL writers are recruited from Havard, so maybe they just don’t come across Irish guys very often.’
Chris, who will play in the forthcoming Apple TV Plus drama The Big Door Prize, stated that his experience as an Irish actor in the United States has been beneficial.
He said: ‘I have found, if I’m honest with you, working in Hollywood has been it’s been grand. Being Irish has been nothing but helpful and useful.
‘I think that living in America for 10 years, I’ve had nothing but positivity about being Irish. I’ve had no problems with people understanding me.’
In The Big Door Prize, Chris portrays Dusty, a married father of one whose life is upended by the appearance of a mysterious contraption in the general shop.
The gadget, named Morpho, claims to reveal the ‘life potential’ of every Deerfield inhabitant, compelling everyone to make significant adjustments to their lifestyles.
The Big Door Prize premieres on Apple TV Plus on Wednesday, March 29.
