Only seconds into the first show of the new season, viewers of Britain’s Got Talent believe they have already chosen their champion.
Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Bruno Tonioli, and Alesha Dixon have returned to uncover the finest talent in the UK, with hundreds heading to the stage to audition for the £250,000 cash prize and a slot on the Royal Variety Show.
And one singer is on the verge of winning Britain’s Got Talent after her stunning singing captured the nation’s hearts.
Amanda, 53, pleased the judges and the public so much that she received the season’s first Golden Buzzer.
For the uninitiated, receiving the Golden Buzzer guarantees that an artist will advance directly to the live semi-finals, skipping the bootcamp stages.
But fans believe Sydnie Christmas will go much further.
The Kent native managed to change Simon’s mind with her amazing version of Tomorrow despite previously stating that she aspires to be a West End singer.
The 28-year-old had all four judges on their feet, with Bruno gushing over her ‘art’ and Alesha saying, ‘You are full of character, charisma, you’ve got it everything going on. Say no more, girl! Smashed it, let’s get it!
Amanda added: ‘Sydnie I think for me, what struck me so much about you is how naturally funny, how brilliant, how warm your presence was the minute you walked on the stage.
‘How you were entertaining everyone but then you brought us the most heartfelt, beautiful version of that song, and that was the best version I’ve heard in my life.’
Reaching out to press the Golden Buzzer, Amanda shouted: ‘So I’m going to do this!’
And viewers couldn’t think of anyone more deserving.
‘Sydnie. Winner right there,’ X user @k4 wrote.
‘I’m calling it @AmandaHolden has the winner of #BGT,’ viewer John said.
‘She’s the winner what a voice,’ Mark added.
Rose said: ‘Yes! Well deserved Sydnie! Absolute goosebumps and never heard that song performed better than that. It’s early but I’m calling it. She’s the winner.’
Amy wrote: ‘Ok Sydnie that was wonderful #BGT#Britainsgottalent Not gonna lie i got a little bit emotional over that performance. i felt that in my heart.’
After Amanda pressed the Golden Buzzer, leaving the audience erupting, Simon called out: ‘Sydnie, I want to say something, that reaction we heard in the room, it’s rare.’
He added: ‘Everyone’s aware it’s tough to get that break for something which you really love, you so deserve what you just got.
‘Your control was amazing, and I used to hate that song and now I absolutely love it. Good for you, that was absolutely brilliant.’
Amanda previously discussed her Golden Buzzer act when it was discovered that it had been pressed nine times in this season alone, despite the fact that judges (and Ant and Dec) are only permitted to press it once apiece.
‘It just felt how I was when I was starting out, she’d done some bits and bobs or whatever. I was lucky I went on to work, but she’s just not had that break she deserves,’ Amanda previously explained.
‘The version of the song she sang was so amazing, and considering how many people have done it, for it to have had such an impact, it really affected me,’ she enthused.
‘I was blown away by her and I really hope this is going to give her a kickstart to a
career that she’s destined to have.’
‘I said to Simon that she had Adele vibes because she was really down to earth, very funny,’ Amanda recalled.
‘I thought she was going to do stand-up when she came on. So she was a little diamond, a little bit rough around the edges, but super charming, very charismatic, very relatable. I thought, “God, she’s a little star”.’
Shortly after Sydnie won the Golden Buzzer, Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly ascended the stage to give theirs.
Ssaulabi Performance Troupe, a martial arts group, wowed the audience with their on-stage act, which included jumping higher than anybody could imagine and destroying wooden planks.
Once again, the judges were on their feet, with Dec shouting: ‘I’ve never felt so alive!’
‘The power, the beauty, the artistry, it blows everything else I’ve seen out of the water! Insane, incredible!’ Bruno praised, while Alesha spoke about how she can’t wait to watch ‘more of that’.
‘I can’t imagine how much discipline, hard work and dedication it’s taken,’ she added, calling their act ‘one of the best things I’ve ever seen on this show.’
Amanda added: ‘My mind is blown, it was like a Quentin Tarantino movie, I couldn’t get over it.’
‘I totally agree with everything everyone’s said,’ Simon went on, crediting the years it ‘must have taken’ the group to achieve their artistry.
‘It was more than a 10, it was an 11!’ he said, highlighting how ‘inspiring’ it was.
Britain’s Got Talent continues tomorrow night at 7.40pm on ITV1 and is available to watch on ITVX.
