After the ITV show’s debut, which included a fire stunt, hundreds of fans of Britain’s Got Talent protested to Ofcom.
Only returning last week, the blockbuster series—judged by Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and Bruno Tonioli—has already generated controversy.
Professional stuntman Thomas Vu, who wrapped himself in a fire-retardant gel before being set ablaze, brought the competition series to a close.
Then, while he was being consumed by flames, Thomas pulled out a Rubix’s Cube and began to solve the classic problem from the 1980s.
Do not do this at home, ever, the show’s hosts Ant and Dec advised viewers following the prank, as Amanda gasped in fear as Thomas caught fire.
On Wednesday, Ofcom disclosed that it had received 334 complaints following the April 15 show and an additional 66 the next day following the April 16 broadcast.
Numerous fans expressed their disbelief at the trick on Twitter during the broadcast of the premiere.
‘Don’t get me wrong, people do crazy stuff and it’s their choice and that’s fine by me but maybe that last act should have been well after the 9pm watershed?? Not sure that kind of playing with fire thing is suitable for young kids who probably stay up to watch BGT,’ one commented.
Another said: ‘BGT absolutely not on, setting yourself on fire, do not try this at home. Shouldn’t be allowed [sic].’
‘Sorry but showing a man setting himself on fire on a “family” show is not acceptable. Even with the mention “do not try this at home”’, someone watching on the night shared with their social media network.
However, after Malakai, a 13-year-old opera singer, sang Pie Jesu at the BGT premiere, viewers praised his performance.
‘Wowers Malakai’s performance was superb his voice was just beautiful every note was just perfection he totally deserved that golden buzzer from Simon and I was in bits just like everyone else while listening to his stunning voice,’ one remarked
Britain’s Got Talent continues Saturday at 8pm on ITV.
