Fans are mourning the loss of not being able to once more get a glimpse into the life of the wealthy and famous after Netflix decided to cancel the newest series, Bling Empire.
The first season of the reality show, dubbed the “real-life Crazy Rich Asians,” debuted in 2021 and chronicled the lives of affluent East and Southeast Asian American socialites headquartered in Los Angeles as they blew their money on lavish parties, shopping extravaganzas, and international travel.
It exposed viewers to figures like Kelly Mi Li, Dorothy Wang, Kane Lim, and Anna Shay.
After two seasons in 2022, a spin-off with a New York setting was launched in January of current year.
Deadline has now claimed that Netflix has shelved the whole series and has no intentions to produce either a second season of Bling Empire or a fourth season of the original series.
Fans have expressed disappointment at the announcement, saying it means more than simply losing a guilty-pleasure programme; it also means losing a show that featured diversity on television.
‘The fact they cancelled Bling Empire totally sucks. WTF,’ one person posted on Twitter.
Another added: ‘Nobody talk to me for the next 48 hours. I will be in mourning.’
Dorothy joined the second season of Bling Empire after making her television debut on Rich Kids of Beverly Hills in 2014, and her relocation to New York was the catalyst for the spin-off series.
After making her television debut on Rich Kids of Beverly Hills in 2014, Dorothy joined the second season of Bling Empire. Her move to New York served as the inspiration for the spin-off series.
‘One of my trepidations about appearing on the show was that I just said, “I’m not really feeling my best, I’m not really looking my best. I don’t know if I’m really ready to come back to TV. I have a lot of doctor’s appointments, I have a lot of things that have to do with my health that I’m taking care of right now.” They said, “Oh yeah, we’re gonna follow that.”
‘We filmed a lot of things about my health journey that didn’t really make it. That, to me, was disappointing because I just felt like it would have been a great story to tell and a great story to share. That, in real life, has been a really long and deep struggle for me.’
The omission of Dorothy’s entire tale, in Dorothy’s words, was a “shame” and a “missed opportunity” to “spread a little bit of awareness” about chronic health problems.
She said, “Pretending my life is perfect, and I’m just shopping, going to lunch, and being sassy in cute outfits all day long, feels insincere.”
Bling Empire is streaming on Netflix.
