Red Dwarf has returned to BBC iPlayer, but not without controversy.
The popular British sitcom initially aired in 1998, however it hasn’t been broadcast on BBC for 15 years.
However, earlier this month, the channel revealed that it has acquired every episode of the first nine seasons of Rob Grant and Doug Naylor’s renowned space comedy.
They also purchased the four seasons that were renewed and shown on Dave, as well as the feature-length special The Promised Land.
Fans are naturally overjoyed that they can now binge-watch Craig Charles’ programme at their leisure – however anybody looking to view the episode titled Krytie TV wasn’t able to do so right immediately.
Because the Series 8 episode was deemed ‘politically inappropriate,’ it did not appear immediately on iPlayer.
Furthermore, all three portions of Back To Earth were deleted.
Kryten (Robert Llewellyn) launches his own pirate TV station to entertain the convicts in Krytie TV, which originally broadcast in 1999.
Viewers have previously criticised the show for’sexist’ speech, since it makes jokes about Kochanski, the sole female character in the cast.
Online commentary earlier accused the programme of giving her the ‘punchline’ with the humour in series 8, in particular, ‘at her expense’.
One review read: ‘It’s not just not funny. It’s anti-funny. It’s sexist, childish, pathetic, immature and frequently insults the audience’s intelligence.’
Another person called the programme “dumb,” and accused it of misogyny for displaying “women with their clothes off in the shower.”
Fans of the comedy series have continued to subscribe to Kyrtie TV, with many unconcerned about the delay in its arrival this week.
One person tweeted: ‘I’ve heard from some people that Krytie TV isn’t on iplayer. Not that I care as it’s probably the worst episode I saw.’
‘I think I know why “Krytie TV” is missing from iPlayer. Perhaps “Women’s Shower Night” is too tasteless and politically incorrect for a modern day audience’, another wrote.
One asked: ‘Is Krytie TV too controversial for iPlayer? I can imagine it doesn’t play well nowadays.’
‘I wonder what the issue is with Krytie TV? I know the plot for that particular episode hasn’t exactly aged well but even so it seems a bit extreme to just drop it completely’, one Twitter user questioned.
When approached for response, the BBC stated that Kyrtie TV is now available on iPlayer alongside the rest of Red Dwarf, blaming the delay on a “technical glitch.”
Red Dwarf’s return to the BBC follows rumours that it would make a comeback following the conclusion of an ongoing legal issue.

When the makers of Red Dwarf were embroiled in a legal case in 2021, the future of the show was uncertain.
However, an arrangement was made in March about the show’s rights.
A statement read at the time: ‘Rob Grant and Doug Naylor are delighted to announce that the ongoing dispute over the Red Dwarf rights has been resolved.
‘Moving onwards and upwards, Rob and Doug hope to launch separate iterations of Red Dwarf across various media, working again with the cast and other valued partners, and wish each other the very best.
