Prepare yourselves! Avatar 3’s nine-hour director’s cut will apparently be divided into a limited Disney Plus series.
The first two installments of the critically acclaimed sci-fi are already rather substantial, but ardent fans may need to set aside some time for this possible series, according to rumours.
During the latest episode of The Hot Mic podcast, film critic Jeff Sneider shared that director James Cameron had a nine-hour cut of the flick ready back in December 2022.
‘Months ago, I put out a rumour about James Cameron having a nine-hour cut of Avatar 3 that he wanted to finish the visual effects form,’ he said.
‘A lot of people were like, “Why would the studio pay for that? Why would he insist on doing visual effects if then he’s gonna cut the movie?”’
He continued: ‘The idea is that Cameron would do all the visual effects for his nine-hour cut of Avatar 3 and then release it on Disney+ as a limited series after the theatrical cut is released.’
The Titanic filmmaker, 68, said at the start of the year that Avatar 3 will focus on another element, with the introduction of the Ash People’representing fire.
The filmmaker added that the as-yet untitled film, which is under post-production and set for a December 2024 release, will feature ‘other civilizations from those I have already presented’ and that he hopes to’display the Na’vi from another aspect because, so far, I have only showed their bright sides’.
He also declared publicly that if it became clear that fans no longer ‘gave a s**t,’ he would discontinue the franchise after the already-filmed third installment.
Fortunately, less than two weeks after its debut, the picture surpassed the $1,000,000,000 (£829,660,000) mark at the global box office.
It was the fastest film to achieve the desired target in 2022, with Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion both succeeding.
The original picture, which was released at the end of 2009, remains the most profitable film in history, with a worldwide total of more than $2.9 billion (£2.4 billion).
