A Star Wars hotel at Walt Disney World in Florida, which offers $20,000 (£16,100) stays for travellers, is scheduled to close after only one year of operation.
The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel was marketed as an experience for fans of the series, with prices ranging from $1,200 (£966) per person each day to $20,000 for the voyage.
It was unveiled during the 2019 D23 Expo as part of the park’s $1 billion (£805 million) Star Wars area, which is set to open on March 1, 2022.
Fans have lambasted the hotel since its inception for its high costs and lack of windows, although it did get a Thea Award for excellent achievement in a themed entertainment venue.
The hotel will now go on its final journeys in September, only one year after it launched.
A spokesperson from Disney announced in a statement: ‘Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is one of our most creative projects ever and has been praised by our guests and recognised for setting a new bar for innovation and immersive entertainment.
‘This premium, boutique experience gave us the opportunity to try new things on a smaller scale of 100 rooms, and as we prepare for its final voyage, we will take what we’ve learned to create future experiences that can reach more of our guests and fans.’
The hotel will transport guests to a Galaxy Far, Far Away until October 1, 2023, when it will permanently lock its doors.
A hotel for three adults and one kid costs $5,999 (£4,832), while a cabin for two is $4,809 (£3,873). For three guests, the price jumps to $5,299 (£4268).
The revelation comes only months after the hotel lowered pricing for weeks in October, November, and December, with the Daily Mail reporting that it was only taking three or four bookings each week.
Disney has also recently sued Florida’s Republican governor and potential 2024 presidential contender Ron DeSantis over theme park district management.
According to the lawsuit, DeSantis engaged in a ‘targeted campaign of government retaliation’ against Disney after the business rejected legislation known as Don’t Say Gay. The state legislation, officially known as the Parental Rights in Education Act, restricts sexual orientation and gender identity education in early-grade schools.
