Jared Leto’s character in The Little Things might be a suspected serial killer, but the actor thinks Albert Sparma is actually a ‘lovable guy’.
The 49-year-old once again transforms his physical appearance for the role as a lead suspect in a gruesome murder case.
Speaking in a press conference for the film, Jared explained the surprising view he had about the character.
The Thirty Second to Mars singer stated: ‘When I think about Albert Sparma, I think of him as kind of a charmer.
‘I wasn’t on the receiving end of whatever might seem scary or terrifying but I never really felt that about him. I thought it was kind of a lovable guy, I guess.’
He continued: ‘It’s a character that has many, many nuances piled on top of each other.’
The film follows Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe ‘Deke’ Deacon (Denzel Washington) as he’s sent to Los Angles for what was meant to be a simple evidence-gathering assignment. However, he soon gets intrigued by the search for a serial killer who has been terrorizing the city.
L.A. Sheriff Department Sergeant Jim Baxter (Rami Malek) has unsuccessfully been leading the search for the killer and is about to have the case taken away from him. Impressed by Deke’s reputation as a great detective, he hopes to team up so that Deke’s instincts can help him find the missing pieces to the puzzle.
What Baxter doesn’t realise is just how much this case mirrors another from Deke’s past, and the dark secrets the deputy sheriff is still haunted by as a result.
When asked how he tried to make the character differ from the ‘serial killer’ archetypes, Jared added: ‘I didn’t really model or think about other performances. I didn’t specifically research killers because there’s a lot of ambiguity there.’
‘I did a lot of kind of just observing and watching documentaries, looking at FBI transcripts and my fair share of reading, because Albert is a crime buff.’
The Suicide Squad star continued: ‘But I really spent more time with thinking about him as a person. I was really curious about Albert Sparma. What made him tick and why he didn’t fit in? Why couldn’t connect with people?
‘Why, why, why, why, why and why again. You ask questions, and you get more questions, and sometimes you find some answer and that’s the game.’
