With Kirby Reed’s surprise reappearance, Scream 6 filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett suggested that nothing is as it seems in the franchise.
Hayden Panettiere’s legendary character was assumed dead when she was savagely stabbed by Charlie Walker (Rory Culkin) in the fourth installment.
Nevertheless, after seeing a very minor clue in last year’s installment that revealed the film aficionado survived the attack, Hayden officially rejoined to the cast for the upcoming sequel, plunging right back into the struggle against Ghostface.
The directors were asked by Metro.co.uk ahead of the horror film’s premiere if fans may anticipate more characters to return from the dead.
‘Yes,’ Matt simply replied, as Tyler agreed: ‘That’s the fun and soapiness of these movies, it feels like…
‘Fans love and latch on to characters and there’s a character for everybody in these movies. I think anything is possible.’
The actors also shared their thoughts on who they’d want to see return to the big screen, with some unexpected names in the mix.
Mason Gooding, who repeated his role as Chad Meeks Martin in the sequel, wasted no time in requesting that Laurie Metcalfe, who played Billy Loomis’ mother, Mrs Loomis, make a reappearance after she was slain in Scream 2.
‘I would love to see Mrs Loomis come back so I could personally shake her hand for the best Ghostface reveal in a white power suit imaginable,’ he told us.
‘That was my favorite moment in the whole franchise.’
Melissa Barrera, who plays Sam Carpenter, took a different approach, appealing for Dewey Riley’s return.
‘Dewey! David Arquette, please, tomorrow! I’ve been brainstorming ways to bring him back,’ she insisted.
Josh Segarra, who is new to the cast as the mysterious Danny, followed suit, adding: ‘Without a question, David Arquette. I want Dewey back so bad, I’m such a big fan of his.
‘I loved him before, but now I just have such an immense respect for him. I’m a big wrestling fan and he’s held the title before. He nerds out just as much as I do for the craft.
‘I would love to just talk wrestling with David all day.’
Although Matt and Tyler remained tight-lipped on who would be returning from the dead, if anybody, they did admit that they are already planning the character list for a hypothetical Scream 7.
‘We don’t know what Scream 7 would be yet, but we have a bunch of actors that we would just love to work with,’ Matt explained.
‘I think that’s one of the amazing things about these movies, they’re all ensembles,’ Tyler added. ‘There’s such an opportunity to introduce new actors into the mix.
‘We’ve done it twice now and I can’t say enough about how much we love the “Core 4”, the returning cast in this one and then the new crop of actors that came in to play with us. The best people we know.
‘I hope that they all are hugely, hugely successful, because it’s so deserved.’
Scream 6 is released in cinemas on March 10.
