This weekend saw a reunion of Michael J Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and their Back to the Future co-stars, Lea Thompson and Tom Wilson.
Nearly 37 years after the film’s premiere, which sparked a three-film franchise, the actors reunited at Fan Expo Portland – and shared a hilarious backstage photo to prove it.
In the movie, Fox and Lloyd played Marty McFly and eccentric scientist Dr Emmett ‘Doc’ Brown, who travelled through time from 1985 to 1955, 2015, and eventually all the way back to 1885.
They pleased fans with a heartwarming onstage reunion last year, but they had some extra special visitors this weekend.
Tom Wilson played bully Biff Tannen and his many cousins and forebears, while Thompson played Marty’s mother Lorraine Baines.
The 61-year-old actress took to Instagram to post a host of photos and video snippets from the occasion, beginning with one of Lloyd, Fox, her, and Wilson all seated in a row and smiling for the camera.
‘Wow honestly had the best time today with my #bttf family,’ she wrote in the caption, tagging her co-stars.
In the first clip, she cuddled close to Lloyd, 84, and joked: ‘Look who’s here, look what the cat dragged in!’ as the veteran actor laughed.
Her second film reunion was with her ‘favourite, favourite guy’ Wilson, as she played on his catchphrase and asked: ‘I’m a butthead?’
As the stars realised that they never had one of those exchanges in the films, Wilson said: ‘I don’t bring this out for anybody, believe me?’
He proceeded to knock on her head, à la Biff, and uttered his famous line: ‘Hello, anybody home?’
‘Think Lea, think,’ he added, before planting a kiss on the top of her head.
‘Okay, so this happened. 2023,’ Wilson wrote as he shared the group photo on social media, while Fox – who was awarded with an honorary Oscar last year – added pictures from the day to his Instagram Story and commented: ‘I love being at these FanExpo events and seeing some of my favourite people like Lea, Tom, Chris and all you #bttf heads. Heavy.’
Back to the Future Part I premiered in 1985, followed by Back to the Future Part II in 1989, and Back to the Future Part III in 1990, all directed by Robert Zemeckis.
The films continue to resonate with moviegoers today, with many fans turning to the comments area to express their admiration for the film and its performers.
‘You guys were a huge part of my childhood, my parents would make us watch the three movies back to back during weekends, we loved it so much ,’shared one follower.
‘Wow I love seeing you all together,’ wrote another.
Fox has said that the third picture was crucial in cementing his connection with Lloyd.
‘Chris is a great guy. He’s very enigmatic,’ he told Variety at Sundance Film Festival. ‘It took me a few films to get to know him. On Back to the Future Part III we connected in a way we hadn’t on the other films. I came to see how much he loved acting. I never got that before.
‘To sit down and talk about acting, and talk about Shakespeare and King Lear…This guy can play King Lear! People don’t expect that of him. He’s full of surprises.’
