DCI John Luther, played by Idris Elba and most recently seen on our screens in 2019, is coming back for a feature-length, Netflix-backed adventure. It’s a doozy too.
Andy Serkis gives you the chills as the gleeful serial psycho-blackmailer David Robey, a shadowy man with such reach that he manages to get Luther sent to jail in the first scenes after using his network to dig up the dirt on this ‘bad apple.’ Despite wearing a wig that is slightly comical, Andy Serkis gives you the impression that he is enjoying himself while playing the role.
Don’t worry, though; Luther manages to get away and spends his time trying to stay one step ahead of his replacement, DCI Odette Raine (Cynthia Erivo), until the two of them are inexorably and reluctance-fully forced to work together to foil Robey’s sick, twisted, vengeful, and long-gestated masterplan. In the end, though, they are successful in their mission to stop Robey.
Falling Sun is able to effectively ramp up to the scale and breadth necessary for a cinematic spin-off thanks to the return of Neil Cross, the creator of the original BBC drama, to drive the writing.
It makes amazing use of its genuine outdoor surroundings, and it has the best carnage sequence set on Piccadilly Circus since An American Werewolf in London.
It should come as no surprise that the muscular Elba fits right back into his iconic character, while Erivo, who stars in Widows, matches his passion. Great entertainment.
15. Out now in selected cinemas and on Netflix from March 10
