*Spoilers below*
Marvel fans around the world are gearing up to devour the next MCU movie this week, as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 enters theatres internationally, after a slightly earlier release in the UK on Wednesday, May 3.
You can read our review here, but based on that and the trailer, it’s safe to assume there’s a lot in store for Peter Quill, nicknamed Star-Lord, and the crew as they battle with their next assignment, one near to their hearts.
Chukwudi Iwuji’s evil High Evolutionary, who has unclear ties to Rocket Raccoon’s (Bradley Cooper) background, is also presented to spectators.
Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), and Groot (Vin Diesel) are all back for one last hurrah, as is a much-changed Gamorah, played by Zoe Saladana – remember, this is the 2014 version of the character who appeared in time after Thanos killed him in Avengers: Infinity War.
Is this, though, the final time we’ll see everyone’s fave misfits all together? Are there any mid- or post-credits sequences that hint to the characters’ future? And how long exactly does their ultimate journey last?
We answer all of these questions below – but spoilers abound! You have been warned.
What is the runtime of Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 3?
You’ll want to find the most comfortable seat in the house for this one since writer-director James Gunn has packed a lot of plot and action into GOTG 3.
The film lasts just under two hours and thirty minutes, or 149 minutes in total.
This is the Guardians’ longest feature-length film, with Vol. 1 clocking in at two hours and one minute and Vol. 2 clocking in at two hours and 16 minutes.
Does it have a post-credits scene? How many?
We’ve arrived at the meat of the matter. If you don’t want to see any spoilers, this is your final chance to do so.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has two credits scenes, one mid-credits and one post-credits, which appears to be the standard practise in recent MCU films.
Both promise futures for several Guardians of the Galaxy characters, though not necessarily together.
What happens in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 mid-credits scene?
After Peter, Gamora, Mantis, Drax, and Nebula have all gone their separate ways with various plans in place, the mid-credits scene jumps forward a little.
We pick up with Rocket, who is now the Guardians’ commander (or captain, as Peter maintains).
Groot is still at his side (and very gigantic), but the new official members of the group are Sean Gunn’s Kraglin Obfonteri and Cosmo the Space Dog (Maria Bakalova).
There are also brand-new recruits Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) and Phylla-Vell, a comic-book version of the character who was one of the girls rescued by the Guardians from the High Evolutionary’s prison ship.
Passing the time on a new planet they’ve come to help out, the Guardians crew discuss their favourite songs, with Rocket offering a sweet throwback to the first Guardians film and the franchise’s popular mixtape by choosing Redbone’s Come and Get Your Love.
As a swarm of terrifying-looking creatures stampedes towards them from the horizon, the new Guardians stir themselves casually, ready to fight.
There hasn’t been any official word on whether these Guardians will return for their own film in the future, but Marvel has kept the door open.
What happens in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 post-credits scene?
After Peter chose to return home to Earth and visit his grandfather (Gregg Henry), with whom he had an emotional reunion at the end of the film, the post-credits scene jumps down to visit him once more.
They eat breakfast together while his grandfather reads the newspaper (which features a fantastic Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Easter egg) and Peter talks about mowing the yard.
After that scene of domestic peace and quiet – dare we even say mundanity? – in stark comparison with Peter’s life defending the Galaxy, a title on the screen reads: ‘The legendary Star-Lord will return’.
So there you have it, again more indication that the Guardians’ ordeal is far from done. They may not appear together again anytime soon, but there is yet hope for these characters (and performers) to return.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is in cinemas now.
