It’s reasonable to say that after December, many of us are ready for a month of minimum alcohol and maximum relaxation.
Fortunately, Netflix appears to get the atmosphere and is releasing some excellent films in the coming weeks.
Whether you’re looking for a classic like Top Gun or Brokeback Mountain, or something gritty and fresh like The Pale Blue Eye, we’ve got you covered with our finest Netflix suggestions for January.
Here’s to a month of suspenseful films and luxurious rest.
We’ll raise a glass to it.
The Pale Blue Eye
Around this new grisly mystery thriller set in 1830, Christian Bale stars. This whodunit is reminiscent of The Terror and The Crucible, and is based on Scott Cooper’s novel of the same name. It’s chilly, gothic, and tense. We’d say it’s ideal for a cosy January night in.
Available on January 6
You People
In this awkward and no-nonsense comedy, comedy superstars Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy star as a couple who are trying to stay together despite the challenges of cultural differences, generational gaps, and societal expectations. It is a journey (and a disastrous tumble face first) into contemporary love and all the complexity that comes along with it.

Pamela, A Love StoryÂ
Pamela Anderson discusses her ascent to stardom and the difficult road that came with it, including her infamous sex tape scandal, in her own words, through the use of personal journals, videos, and recollections that she has compiled throughout her life. A must-see for any and all fans.
Available January 31
Dog Gone
There are no rewards for figuring out what the plot of this new stupid original film from Netflix is. Yes, you read that correctly: a dog has been reported missing. Vital watching for dog lovers, not so essential for everyone else. On the other paw, if you’re looking for a watch that will warm you up on a cold day, then this one is pawfect.

Luckiest Girl Alive
The mystery novel with the same name that was published in 2015 and became a top seller in The New York Times has become a traditional choice for Christmas reading over the previous few years. And the movie version featuring Mila Kunis is not an exception to this rule either. A writer is having the time of her life in New York when her troubled history comes back to haunt her with ramifications that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Brokeback Mountain
Oh, a timeless masterpiece. This epic love story was released in 2005 and takes place in 1963 Wyoming. It follows two sheepherders as they begin a passionate affair with one another. The cast is also really good, with Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal playing the roles of the lovers who are doomed to be apart. If you haven’t seen it yet, you must. Be prepared to cry.

Minority Report
This science fiction action movie from 2002 is just as exciting to see today as it was when it was released. In a future in which law enforcement agencies are equipped with psychic technology, which enables them to apprehend suspects for crimes even before they are committed, anything at all is possible. You’ll be pleased you skipped the pub after watching this Tom Cruise classic directed by Steven Spielberg because the plot is full of unexpected twists and turns.

Top Gun
The original does not fail to live up to expectations, even in light of the latest remake of this classic, which includes many flashy new scenes. Tom Cruise in his heyday, grainy pictures, and those famous words are what make Top Gun 1986 the definitive version of the film. No remake could ever hope to give the same enchantment as the original.

Bad Boys II
Bad Boys II needs no introduction, but it does when it magically appears on Netflix, promising the best night in. The Miami Police Department cops are back at their (second?) best in this classic, starring Will Smith, Michael Bay, and Gabrielle Union. There’s a reason this franchise is a cult classic that shouldn’t be overlooked in favour of fresh releases.

Stand By Me
Get your tissues ready. Stand By Me is still as amazing today as it was in 1986 when it was released for a heartbreaking journey into the anguish, laughter, and often-overlooked seriousness of childhood. The film, directed by Rob Reiner and based on Stephen King’s novel, follows four friends on a trip until they come across a body. What follows is many things, but one thing is certain: it is vastly underappreciated.
