We’ve seen our first glimpses of Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in Wicked, and we’re instantly smitten.
Ariana Grande, 29, and West End legend Cynthia, 36, will co-star in the film adaptation of the musical Wicked.
Glinda will be played by the former Nickelodeon actress, while Elphaba will be played by Cynthia.
We see Ariana in full costume in first-look photographs, and if these images are any indication, we’re in for a tremendous extravaganza.
Ariana and Cynthia teased their Instagram fans with the photos, posing without words because, well, the photos truly do all the talking in this case.
Ariana as Glinda may be seen climbing a stairway in a lovely, puffy pink outfit.
The pictures are rather dark, and details are difficult to see, but Ariana’s long blonde hair has been gathered back into a ponytail, and she appears to be proceeding with care.
Meanwhile, Cynthia’s picture depicts her like we’ve never seen her before, with a broomstick in her hand, completely covered in green paint, and, of course, wearing her pointed hat.
The images are indeed breathtaking, and followers couldn’t stop talking about them in the comments.
‘YES!!!!! 🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️’, wrote Bridgerton star Simone Ashley.
‘Unreal’, declared Rachel Zegler, while Normani squealed: ‘OMG OMG OMG OMGGGGG’.
‘My body is ready!!!!!!!’, wrote one fan.
Another praised: ‘you look absolutely magical, you were born to play glinda’.
Wicked, written as a prologue to The Wizard of Oz, chronicles the narrative of Elphaba’s transformation into the Wicked Witch of the West, with the original Broadway production premiering in 2003, starring Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda.
Meanwhile, the film adaptation has been in the works for years but has encountered setbacks, including the departure of director Stephen Daldry.
But filming is already well underway, as Ariana just announced that the cast and crew, which includes Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, has reached the halfway point.
Marking the milestone on Instagram, the Dangerous Woman hitmaker said she was ‘savouring every millisecond’ of the journey, praising her character Glinda for showing her ‘so many new things every day.’
She added that she was struggling for words due to being ‘so grateful’, hailing co-star Cynthia her ‘brilliant twin flame’ and ‘sister’.
Ariana has made no secret of her affection for the musical in the past, covering songs from the score on multiple occasions, including a performance of The Wizard and I during the show’s 15th anniversary in 2018.
Mika’s Popular Song, a single that substantially samples and remixes Glinda’s popular song Popular, also includes the chart-topper.
Wicked’s release date is currently slated for November 2024.
