The Y2K fashion boom isn’t slowing down – now, we’re seeing a return of distinctive coats with furry cuffs and collars.
Back in the 00s, the boho hippie huns became obsessed with Afghan coats, the style of which originated as a traditional garment and first became adopted by Western shops en masse in the 60s and 70s.
Typically made with goat or sheepskin and fleece, for a classic pop-culture example, think Penny Lane in Y2K period classic Almost Famous.
Now, not only has the popularity of Afghan-style coats seen another resurgence but so too have other faux-fur-trimmed styles that wouldn’t have looked out of place at the door for Studio 54.
Thus offering further proof that, along with things like hip-hugging jeans, platforms and middle partings, late 90s and early 00s fashion owed so much to the 70s – and so do we.
To perfect the look, fluffy collars are a must, and matching trims and cuffs are a very-nice-to-have.
