Tom Cruise has many abilities, but putting on a realistic British accent does not appear to be one of them.
In fact, Tom’s Mission Impossible co-star Simon Pegg stated on Thursday that the 60-year-old Tom’s British imitation is so awful that he’ll ‘never’ portray a British character on television.
Simon’s disclosure came during a conversation with Chris Moyles this week.
Simon recounted an incident about crashing a car while discussing his and Tom’s upcoming film, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.
‘I’m driving up this hill and the director Chris McQuarrie is going, “look at Tom, look at Tom,” the Shaun of the Dead star explained on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X.
‘There’s three cameras mounted on the car and I’m trying to look where I’m going in this flipping expensive car and he’s still saying, “look at Tom, look at Tom, look at Tom”.’
Simon continued: ‘I’m trying to look where I’m going and I just hit this massive rock and I kind of went over and I smashed the car.’
Chris, 49, then asked: ‘What do you do when that happens?’ to which Simon replied: ‘Laugh, it ain’t my car is it!
‘I’ve got Cruise in the passenger’s seat and like he’s jumping off cliffs on bikes and I can’t even drive a car up a hill.’
Probing Simon further, radio host Chris queried: ‘There must be something, what are you better at him at, there must be thing?’
It was then than Simon revealed: ‘I’m better than him at accents, we mess around a lot on set and when you hear him try to do a British accent it’s hilarious… it’s somewhere between Dick Van [Dyke].
‘I mean, Tom Cruise can pretty much do anything, but he’s never gonna play a Brit.’
