Ruffling the BBC’s feathers is perhaps not the best idea right now, but Richard Osman is willing to take the risk.
The BBC has made headlines this week for all the wrong reasons, after reprimanding Gary Lineker for comments he made against the government’s immigration policy.
Lineker, 62, was asked to leave down as host of Match Of The Day after comparing the Tory Party’s stance on immigration to that of 1930s Germany on his personal Twitter account.
After a dramatic few days, it was ultimately announced on Monday (March 13) that the former professional footballer will be back at the helm of the programme this weekend, with Lineker thanking his colleagues for their support.
While the impartiality debate seemed to have subsided, former Pointless star Osman, 52, couldn’t help but take one more shot.
He posted a humorous message about crisps on his own Twitter account, which has 1.2 million followers.
‘Now I’m allowed to tweet anything without being fired, I can finally say it,’ he began, hinting at something ultra controversial.
‘Pickled Onion is not the best Monster Munch flavour,’ he then declared.
‘Roast Beef is.’
Oh dear, what has he done?
The author then followed up with a sarcastic: ‘Guys, I’ve been fired,’ playing on the chaos of the Lineker saga.
Of course, Osman’s supporters were ready to participate in the argument, but not everyone agreed with him.
‘The gall of you to tweet this when the correct answer is clearly Flamin’ Hot’, one person tweeted.
‘You need to be more crisp inclusive. What about Monster Claws from Aldi?’, wrote another.
Others jokingly tagged the BBC complaints department in the replies, while some threatened to ‘boycott’ Osman’s show House Of Games.
Praising him, one fan mocked: ‘AMEN! About time someone had the balls to tweet on the big issues’.
‘Thank you for speaking the truth, Richard’, one Twitter user added.
On the Lineker front, the BBC issued a statement at 10 a.m. today, confirming that the dispute had been addressed.
‘Gary is a valued part of the BBC and I know how much the BBC means to Gary, and I look forward to him presenting our coverage this coming weekend,’ the statement read.
Lineker added: ‘I am glad that we have found a way forward. I support this review and look forward to getting back on air.’
Let’s hope he doesn’t start Saturday’s programme with an argument about crisps…
