Daisy May Cooper, a comedian, is allegedly in discussions to join the 007 franchise as espionage boss M.
Producers hoped the 36-year-old actress, who is friends with No Time To Die co-writer Phoebe Waller Bridge, would offer a “comedic and quirky edge” to the character.
Earlier, the renowned role was performed by Dame Judi Dench, 88, and 60-year-old Ralph Fiennes, but the shift in tone appears to be part of a series shake-up after Daniel Craig‘s retirement as James Bond.
A source told The Sun: ‘Daisy is a close pal of Phoebe, whose involvement in Bond was such a success that it sparked an unlikely conversation.
‘Suddenly the production team were getting excited about the prospect of really taking M in a different direction.
‘With Daniel leaving, it seemed the time to start looking at changes across the board and the dynamic between Bond and ‘M’ is at the heart of the films.
‘So this opens the door to it being a bit lighter and more comedic going forwards – and will of course impact the direction the new 007 goes in too’.
According to the newspaper, cinema experts believe the choice to return to a female M is another evidence that the next Bond will remain male, following rumours that the spy’s gender will be changed for the next installment.
The participation of Phoebe and Daisy in the next Bond film might signal a return to the espionage series’ more humorous features, as seen in Sean Connery and Roger Moore’s tenure as the spy.
Secret Intelligence Service Director M has appeared in Ian Fleming books since James Bond‘s debut and is based on the writer’s superior in the Naval Intelligence Section during WWII.
Daisy made her black comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? for BBC1 after receiving critical praise and a Bafta for her part in BBC mockumentary This Country.
The drama, which also stars Lenny Rush, depicts a lady who is suffering a hidden loss while navigating a dreary marriage.
