Valentine’s Day is almost approaching, and while you may be weary of hearing about it, we assure this is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the holiday, regardless of your relationship status.
Wearing romance-inspired nails is an easy way to quietly update a manicure style.
Hearts are usually a safe bet, but lover nails, or heart tips, are a stylish twist on the classic.
Instead of a French tip with a heart in the centre, move the heart down so that its corners form the tip.
TikTok and Instagram users have started posting their interpretations of the look, with any colour working.
And how do you do it? It’s super easy – you don’t even need anything aside from your one nail polish.
All you have to do, like in the video below, is paint downwards to the tip of the nail, starting at where you want the heart to begin on the nail.
You could do this on all nails, or just one to keep it minimal.
It’s preferable to utilise the bottom third of the nail for the appearance to create the desired heart shape without taking up the entire nail, but individuals with shorter nails may need to adjust.
Once you’ve mastered the heart form, you may need to apply a second coat to avoid patchiness.
Keep a cotton pad and acetone available so you may try a few times until you get the perfect motion for your nails.
Instead of one thick gloop that won’t lie flat along the rest of the nail, work in light layers. Finish with a top coat if desired to seal it in.
Other variations include sketching a simple heart outline on the tip, as beauty editor Rebecca Fearn has done above. You’ll need a nail art brush for accuracy.
Choose any romance-inspired colour, from creamy pinks to deep reds, and either mix and match tones across nails or stick to a single colour.
Are you ready to give it a shot?
These are the polishes we recommend for the task.
Ciate Plant Pots in Glow Up
Inject more fun into the look with a neon pink, instead of the classic red. We love this Plant Pots formula for how longwearing it is.
Essie Gel Couture in Rock the Runway
A pillar box red in a harder-wearing formula than the original Essie line.
Nails Inc Sweet Nail Candy Set
Going multi-coloured? This set is perfect, giving all the classic romantic tones in one hit.
Nailberry in Le Temps Des Cerises
Go for a mature, sophisticated look with a deep crimson. Reds have a tendency to stain nails, but Nailberry has one of the best formulas out there to prevent damage.
