Warning: spoilers ahead for The Last of Us season 1 episode 9.
As much as we hate to admit it, The Last of Us season 1 has come to an end with the episode 9 finale.
Millions of spectators across the world will be eager to see the final installment, which will be available online on HBO in the United States and Sky and NOW in the United Kingdom, as Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) continue on their perilous trip.
While there will be no new episodes next week, many fans are eagerly anticipating what season 2 will bring.
Here’s all you need to know about the series’ future.
Will there be a season 2 of The Last Of Us?
Finally, we can respond with a hearty ‘yes’ to the issue of whether The Last of Us will return for a second season!
The news was confirmed in January this year, shortly after the first season debuted on HBO in the US and on Sky and NOW in the UK.
In a statement, Neil Druckmann – the creator of the game and co-showrunner of the TV series – said: ‘I’m humbled, honoured, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey.
Praising the ‘incredibly’ cast and crew, he added: ‘Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with season two.’
Could Bella Ramsay and Pedro Pascal return for season 2?
It was already a given among many fans that surely Bella and Pedro would both be back for the second season.
Yet, the fact that they both survive the last episode of season one is enough proof that the duo will be back for more.
When Bella tweeted on January 27th, she all but guaranteed their return for the second season: ‘I FORGOT ABOUT TWITTER FOR A SECOND but you heard about season two right? I’m taking a ride with my best frienddddd (again) :).’
What could season 2 of The Last Of Us be about?
Season two of The Last of Us will probably be based on the video game franchise’s second installment, The Last of Us Part II, which was released in 2020.
Look away now if you don’t want to know what occurs in the game, which might offer a lot of the basis for the TV show’s second season plots.
** Video game spoilers ahead for The Last of Us Part II **
In Part Two, Joel is pursued by a lady named Abby, who is seeking vengeance for her father’s death.
Her father was one of the physicians scheduled to operate on Ellie to try to discover a treatment for Cordyceps before he was murdered by Joel.
Abigail murders Joel in front of Ellie, prompting Ellie to embark on a vengeful spree.
Both Ellie and Abby are playable characters in the game, so it’ll be interesting to see if the TV adaptation presents key moments or episodes from Abby’s point of view.
For the moment, the programme has only been renewed for a second season, so it remains to be seen if a third season is in the works, possibly splitting Part II into two parts.
The Last of Us is available to watch on Sky and NOW.
