Fans of Pointless were gutted when Alexander Armstrong’s co-host Richard Osman announced his exit after 12 years.
After finding incredible success as a novelist with his 2020 bestseller The Thursday Murder Club, Richard revealed he’d be stepping away from the main programme to focus on writing – though he will continue to appear on future Pointless Celebrity specials.
While we don’t yet know when his last episode will air, he revealed to BBC Breakfast on June 7 that his final scenes have already been filmed, with new ones arriving soon.
Richard confessed he was actually quite excited to be able to partake in the game at home, adding: ‘The idea that I can watch and actually play along and guess at the answers… they’ve got amazing, amazing people replacing me, so I’m really looking forward to it.’
So, just who will be replacing him?
Who is replacing Richard Osman on Pointless?
Richard Osman’s role as the ‘Pointless Friend’ will be filled in by a number of guest celebrities (for now).
Presenter Alexander Armstrong, who remains in his role as host, will be on set with a range of talent – from soap stars to TV actors, comedians and radio hosts.
Joining him on the BBC One game show are:
Episodes star Stephen, 54, is among the new guest presenters.
The actor has had a long career as an actor, appearing in Green Wing, I’m Alan Partridge and The Split, among others. He even voiced Postman Pat in a 2014 flick.
Of the new role, the actor joked: ‘I am incredibly excited to be joining my old friend Xander on such an iconic show. What could possibly go wrong?’
Coronation Street icon Sally Lindsay, 48, who played Shelley Unwin in the ITV soap, has also been in the Sky One comedy Mount Pleasant and her own Channel 5 series, Posh Sleepover.
She’s now off to co-star on Pointless, saying of her latest gig: ‘As everyone knows I love a game show and being asked to sit in Richard Osman’s hallowed chair is beyond thrilling! Can’t wait to be ‘Pointless’!’
Former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq, 46, will be remembered by many for her time on the BBC children’s series – which she helmed for 11 years from 1997 until 2008.
She was its longest-serving female presenter, but has since stepped back from TV work to focus on parenthood. She’s now a celebrated children’s author – but is returning to the BBC for Pointless.
Comedian Alex Brooker, 38, is also set to appear in Richard Osman’s Pointless seat.
He began his career as a journalist, first appearing on TV in 2011 as a reporter for The Paralympics Show. Nowadays, he’s probably best known for his work on Channel 4 comedy hit The Last Leg.
He’s also about to appear in Soccer Aid 2022.
Lauren Laverne, 44, is a radio DJ, TV presenter, writer and was even once in an indie band called Kenickie.
Now, in addition to her guest spot on Pointless, fans can listen to her radio show on BBC Radio 6 Music, or catch up on Desert Island Discs, which she took over from Kirsty Young in 2018.
You may know comedian Ed, 36, from the likes of Mock the Week, Taskmaster, his stand-up or podcast Off Menu.
He’s been on the celebrity version of Pointless before, and now he’ll be stepping up as a guest co-host.
He told Chortle: ‘I’m over the moon to have a go at co-hosting one of my favourite TV shows ever and I can’t wait to show everyone my impeccable general knowledge (providing I have full access to the internet at all times).’
Pointless airs weekdays at 5.15pm on BBC One.
